I know this is slightly necro'd, but I have to put in my $0.02 and offer that it's gotta be something with the emissions. If it's fine in closed loop but starts sucking air when it goes to open loop, I'm thinking something in the exhause recirc system is sticking to allow clean air into the engine without it being metered.
