Just reporting back....
After 16K miles my conclusion is that, for the '13 MY at least, the ECU constantly goes back and forth between premium and regular fuel maps. My view on the cause is crankcase gases routed back into the intake by the PCV system. The gases can cause pinging regardless of the fuel octane.
After installing a catch can the car is maintaining the noticeably more peppy premium map for me. No audible pinging. Idle has improved as well, engine smoother.
