Why are these threads being deleted? It would be better to lock the threads instead of removing the complete discussion.

I believe what you are seeing are threads that are being removed as they were only limited time specials/group buys/etc...
I've seen it happen on a few threads myself and in each case, it was generally items with an expiration date on the purchase...
