It is bi-modal and it is operated by a hydraulic control. Essentially, at 3500 RPM the valve automatically opens to partially bypass the mufflers and make it a 'straight back' exhaust, giving more free-flow and sound for spirited driving.

You can get a 'mild to wild' remote that will keep the butterfly valves open at all times, though
