Doug Thorley shorties have to be welded to the downpipe just above the cats, and the original downpipe must be cut according to their instructions. They do not bolt directly. This makes installation something of a pain, since most people cannot do it themselves; however, this also means there is very little chance that they will leak.
EDIT: If you're referring to the connection to the engine block exhaust manifold, you reuse the stock header bolts; so, there's just as much chance of a leak there as with any other headers.
