You can have 5in pipes going all the way back but if you have it choked down to 2.5in at the end of the system, you're not going to flow any more than if there was 2.5in all the way back. It's debateable but it could possibly even hurt flow. Exhaust flow works on pulses that pull the exhaust through the system. Upsetting those pulses can have a positive or negative affect depending on how it upsets them. If you're wanting to upgrade to a 3in axleback in the near future, I can see the reasoning behind going with 3in mid piping now. What is your reasoning behind wanting to go 3in mid pipes back to 2.5in mufflers?
