Turbo Porsche's have been running low mounted turbos for as far back as I can remember with no issues. And being exposed to the elements.

I've rode in snow, ice, salt/sand/gravel cover roads here with no lost of integrity to my turbos. I haven't seen a turbo set up that hangs lower than the exhaust pipes to date for the V6. Any FI set up will give you problems at sometime or another. These engines weren't built to take the abuse so any add on could lead to some kind of failure.

Here is a picture of the turbo I replaced in March for a bad oil seal after 2 full years of boost abuse and element abuse. Looks like any other under the hood mounted turbo that isn't wrapped or specially treated. Turbo's are built extremely durable these days compared to before. Especially the Borg Warner line of turbos. Tune and install is where the problems are.
