Who goes to car shows?
As a photographer, I see many different people taking pictures at car shows. A lot of times, the person taking the picture is simply an auto enthusiast wanting pictures of the cool cars. But many shows bring in a photographer to sell photos of the cars at the event, and they charge top $$ for the photos.
I am wondering how many of you purchase these photos? As a photographer, I am not interested because 1, I can take them myself and 2, they are so awful I cannot understand why anyone would buy them. Here is an example of a car show photo. Random people standing around, lousy backdrop, hood open etc... do you really want that? Getting your car photographed should be done in the same manner you get a family portrait. Schedule a time and find a location. Maybe even a model to pose next to your car.

Background is something most people don't take into account.
When I got my Camaro I searched for places, went over to them when the sun was at the right height, no one else around. Angled the car for the best light, moved trashcans out of the view... Some of them turned out really nice to my eyes. This is a sunrise.

My wife is a photographer also and she tries to give me tips to try with the car, but I agree, the car show pictures are absurdly expensive. Camaro Nationals last year got you right as you got through check in (whether your car was dirty from the trip still or not) and photoshopped a nice background behind it. I liked the picture and it was a nice look even though the car was dirty but I wasn't going to spend $150 on a poster of my uncleaned car. I'm with you OP, I'd rather pick my location and take a nice picture there.
