Increasing Idle
Hey Guys,
I was wondering if there are any risks associated with slightly increasing my car's idle. I know these cars have a rough idle in general, but sometimes at stop lights my idle flutters so much it feels like the car is just about to stall and comes back, so on and so on, and it always leaves me a little worried. So I thought maybe increasing the idle slightly would fix my problem (I have a Diablo Tuner), just checking since I don't know much about tuning and what not. Thanks ! |

Do you have an aftermarket CAI? Have check the air intake/filter to see if secure or clean?
I'm not sure but I would think the stock lifters or cam would not like the higher idle-

Ya I checked the CAI and everything seemed secure/ clean. I'll check again when it stops raining to make sure...
So no go on the idle increase then.. |

I had the same thing on my V6 after installing my CAI. I ended up getting a CEL indicating a lean condition. After inspecting it again I found the hose on the clean side of the PCV system was loose where it goes into the engine, leaking unmetered air into the engine... Fixed that and the CEL and idle problems quit. Check and double check for vacuum leaks too.

I noticed this on my SS and it bothered me. Never seemed like it was going to stall, but just seemed too low at stop lights and a little rough. I increased it by 100RPM with my diablo tuner and now it idles nice and smooth at stop lights

Mine is an LS3. I'm going to check out the CAI install later and make sure nothing is leaking etc. And if everything seems in order i'll increase the idle 100 rpm and see if it sorts it out or not. I'll report back after.

Ok so I checked my CAI and all that for leaks, nothing seemed loose and I couldn't find any leaks. So I decided to increase the idle by 100 with my Diablo tuner. Let it idle for about 5 minutes or so afterwards and it seemed much more steady, no more dipping down. Hopefully doing so won't have any long term negative effects on the car... but for now i'm happy with it!

I noticed the idle thing on my SS on the way home from the dealership last night. It idling right in the 450-475 rpm range, but does flutter a bit giving it a slight rough idle. Car is new - only 28 miles and no mods. I did notice the A/C kicked it up to about 550 rpm when it was on though.
No biggie I guess since my last car was cammed. But I think the low idle is responsible for me stumbling a bit on take offs. Almost killed it driving it off the lot, and I have been driving stickshifts for over 30 years along with 90% of all my miles driven in that time were stickshifts. But I started figure out that it likely the 450 rpms. Any slight drop while letting the clutch out causes it to stumble or lug a little. After a day I'm getting use to it and compensate by just reving it a little more than I would in other cars at take-off. Does pretty well like that. I'll like do a few mods come August, getting at the same time. I will get them to idle it up about 100rpms then. Should help. |
