How to order a new key?

Hi,
I have used only one key remote for the last 4 years.
I could tell it was getting pretty worn, but the other day, the unlock button completely collapsed into the remote leaving a hole.

I have my second remote that I am now using, but want to get a new key/remote for backup.

Anyone know if I can order direct somewhere, or do I need to go through a dealer?

Thanks.

I don't know about aftermarket. I would say dealer most of them need to be programed to the car

Same thing happened to me. After normal usage the buttons just wear down and I've got holes in all the buttons now.

You're going to have to go through the dealer for a new key.

I'm planning on getting a viper alarm with a key (much better quality key) instead of replacing mine. I'll still have to carry around my old key to turn on the car and manually unlock, but that's fine with me. But I'll be able to lock/unlock and remote start and everything else.

But to your thread, dealer is the best/easiest way to do it.

Definitely go through the dealer since only they can order the key with the right cut for your car.

I have 4 key fobs total because a few years ago I bought two extras as spares after locking myself out after OnStar expired. Which I know is all kinds of overkill, but oh well, better more than not enough. Also be sure to call around to different nearby dealerships. All dealerships around me wanted ~$70 or something per key. Found one just outside town that could do it for less than 20 per... I forgot the exact amount, but it was cheap enough that I was like, "Sure, I'll order 2."

Go to ebay. Order the blank Camaro key fob. I ordered one for $23

When you get it, open the key. Using a small punch pin and a small hammer, punch out the retainer pin on the key. Pull the blank off. Do the same with your old key.

Put the old key on to your new fob. Hammer the retainer pin back in.

You need the second key to your car now ( got two with the car right?)

Put the old key in the ignition.
Hold door unlock button to unlock position.
Turn old key to "on position" without starting the car
Keep holding the unlock button .
Turn old key on and off twice.
Pull out old key.
Put in new key.
Turn it to on position.
Let go of door unlock button
Your dash should read " third key programmed"
Enjoy your new, programmed key fob.

yea when my key fell apart I brought a blank key off ebay and had a local locksmith cut it and I programmed it to my car. Cheap and simple.

Order a new key from your dealer. Programming the new remote is EASY! Take your old key, start car. Turn off car, insert new key and start car. Everything will be programmed on the remote. The key is laser cut from GM, so your dealer will need to order (2-4 days, generally). You will need your registration to order at most dealerships.
