Rear Axle Nut P/N & Torque?
Anyone know what the correct Part Number and Tq is for the Rear Axle Shaft Nut on a 2010 1SS?
I read that they should not be reused, and I researched the forum threads but the recommendations for the Part Number are all over the place, and the Torque is stated at 85 Ft Lb and/or 199 Ft Lb (I think this is the correct torque). Also not finding a P/N when searching the GM Parts Supply outlets like GM Parts Giant and others. Rock Auto lists a "Spindle Nut" from Dorman OEM #11611687, is that correct? The other PN I see is 11611234? Or Gezzz - anyone just reuse them and add a little Locktite? |

The 11611687 Part number is correct. I usually replace them, but like NoDakZ/28, wouldn't be afraid to re-use them. I don't own a torque wrench that reads to 199 ft/lb, so I just tighten them to what feels like 200ish ft/lb. haven't had an issue in the 293,000 miles I've logged on it so far.

Thanks Guys - I mistakenly removed them when changing Rotors on my current Bandit Conversion Project. I DID reuse them when changing Axle's on my other 2010, and never gave it another thought.
So these look like new, and will use some LT Blue. Now I hope the park brake will hold the axle for the 199 Ft Lb of Torque! |

I'm not sure I would want to reuse them. But I'm thinking on a stock engine maybe it's not a big issue. I always go to the dealer to get mine.

So I was looking at suppliers for 11611687, which is M24x1.5 Nut. However, the nuts I have and removed used a 32mm Socket, not a 36mm!
"M24 (24mm) Thread Size. 19mm Nut Thickness (H) 36mm Socket Size (J)" So are there some differences on these 2010 SS Camaros, or the spindle thread size is the same but the nut replacement went from 32mm to 36mm?? I did a little experiment on my ss related to single use bolts for the rear calipers. The left side got new bolts and the right side reused the current bolts. The left side was able to achieve the correct torque plus angle measurement and the right was not. I reused the front bolts and they were not able to achieve the angle too.
A bolted joint is in tension from the bolt acting as a spring. A reused bolt acts like a spring that has been stretched and not returned to relaxed. All that said, all bolts are still tight after two years, so theories and real world are not always the same. |

I just ordered the Axle nuts, 36mm, and assume even though I removed mine which are 32mm, the spindle size is the same and the 36mm is now the replacement. We will see. |

My 2010 had the 32mm but I agree they changed to 36mm at some point. 1LE and ZL1 are 36mm as well. The only torque spec I have ever seen on the nuts is 199# and I have reused the nuts many times, especially the ones you stake into the grove on the axle. Once it's staked, it's not going anywhere. After 2-3 uses the metal where you stake it gets a little suspect, so I do change them occasionally.
