Engine number location in the V8

I need to know the number of my engine to register it in the UK, I have looked at the engine and all I can see is a 4 digit number which looks more like a casting number. Does anyone know the exact location of the engine number of a way I can find out what it is?

Should be stamped on the side of the block.

You have to crawl underneath, usually near the oil filter or vicinity.
It should be a pin stamping.

Like upflying said, its a pin stamp. It's located on the rear driver side of the block, below the heads. I can try and find some pictures if needed.
