Who has experience with a 427 Tall Deck
I have a 1968 GMC Dump Truck that I am going to scrap.
The 427 in the dump truck runs and has never had any problems. Options are to either pull the motor and sell it for a core, or keep it, strip it down and in the next couple of years build a big cubic inch stroker motor (496, 540 or 596) to go into my chevelle. The 427 is a true tall deck motor, with a 4 bolt main and a forged crank. Does anybody have any experience with a tall deck block & build? Thanks Brian

Keep it and build it, I built a 527 out of one a few years back. Only down side is I have to give nod to about 20 prius owners that are saving enough fuel to feed it.
Edited 527 not 572.

I dont think you will be able to get a 572 out of a 427 block(bore size) but you can definitely build a 496 and I will say that is PLENTY on the street.
I just finished my build and am still tuning it and I cant get traction anywhere below 45 |

You are correct, I didn't catch my mistake, I went 527 not 572, using a 4.375" bore and 4.375" stroke. Had originally built it as a 497 with a 4.25" bore but dropped a valve and scarred the cylinder wall pretty good. The 4.375" bore is on the ragged edge of bore size these blocks can handle.

Yeah then just get it sonic tested. You will definitely be on the edge though, but in all honesty you probably wont hurt a thing on it. My next build will be a 4.5 inch bore block, 540 rolls off the tongue very well I have my badged as a 427 and when I walk off and leave blown corvettes they cant understand why What kind of heads and cam are you going to run in it? |

Keep us posted, there was 2 of those for sale out of school busses. I ask my engine guy about then and he said it's not worth messing with for me, Granted I like the total radical and twisting one to the moon so maybe he meant bad option for what I like.
Also said something about heads, intake etc. On the other hand I would love a pump gas motor in 67 corvette. This race fuel sucks! Would love to do a 10-11 to1 compression motor. Big nasty cam and ride, as it is now the mighty was 327 is over kill unless fuel doesn't hurt ya. Last time I drove it she guzzled 15 gallons in 100 miles and fuel $7.99 a gallon. Takes all the fun out, but I do like POing all the neighbors lol |
