So I saw one today...

I stopped by my local bank and saw a CGM 2SS/RS parked there with the guy sitting in it waiting for someone. I couldn't resist the urge to go up to him and compliment him on his car. We chatted for about 20 seconds, him describing how awesome it is Then I asked him if he paid MSRP for the car. He answered yes. I asked, "How Much?". 44k he replied. You all can pretty much guess what my reaction is from there..... I didn't say anything, I was in shock and awe. Speechless. He then said that the Camaro is so rare that the dealer wouldn't budge. I told him you paid way too much man.... At least he was (sorta?) happy with his purchase. Over 5k in dealer markup....wow

I would avoid that dealer if possible:

Some people here paid that much for their car. How much you paid is usually all in reference to how much you make. Maybe $44,000 wasn't much for him. I know a guy back home that's quite well off and told the dealer he'd pay about $5k over MSRP to have his car first.

Personally I'd never pay that much, even if I had the money to blow. But I'm frugal

I was prepared to go over MSRP if I missed that deadline for ordering a Transformers Edition and had to quickly nab one off of a lot somewhere. Luckily, I didn't.

I would say Price depends on availability in your area. 6 months ago a lot of people were paying a lot of markup to get one. Some dealers even sold cars people had ordered out from under them to make some extra cash forcing them to wait even longer. I would say that as great as my car is and as fun as it has been being one of the first around to have one. It's not a Lamborghini. It isn't a limited production car and it will not increase in value (at least not for 40 years). So I refused to pay $0.01 more than MSRP. Some would and did pay $10k over sticker to get one. All I can say is at least they got a great car, but they could have had a great cat with a supercharger and full exhaust and headers if they waited 3 months. Oh well to each his/her own.

How do you know he paid 5K over MSRP? A fully loaded SS can cost more that 44K.

Availability is the key, I wouldn't pay $3K over sticker back in October '09. So I waited a few months, now paying just under sticker The wait sucks, but I can endure it for $4K!!!

There's no need to rain on his parade after he got the car. What are you going to accomplish? Making yourself feel smarter than him?

I was at a local dealership last week and they wanted

42K for 2SS/RS
36K for 1SS
35k for 2LT

Makes me glad I pre-ordered mine.

Honestly, I'm surprised you asked him how much he paid for it. Asking if he paid MSRP I think is about as far as anyone should go. Usually if someone asks me how much I paid, I'm quick to point out that it's kind of rude. I mean, how would you feel if someone asked you how much you make at your job?

He probably did pay MSRP.

Did he have the 21" rims, sunroof, automatic trans, stripes, interrior?

And then said you don't make much.

I personally wouldn't have asked how much he payed, you should have a rough idea as you where looking at them. I also wouldn't have told him that he payed too much, he just got done saying how much he loves it so there's no reason to bust his balls for how much he payed.

That's true. You need to know your options.

21'' wheels and GFX are what puts the 2SS/RS up over 40K. If it doesn't have these options, It shouldn't cost more than 37-38K (even with a sunroof).

I agree that it's rude to ask directly, but when someone asks how I can afford a $40,000 car I'm quick to point out I got it for significantly less. If they want to go into detail for the sake of them wanting to purchase I'd be ok to talk general numbers.

Just about to get out of college I'm getting the "how much are you going to make" when I get to my job. Doesn't bother me too much as it's mostly by people wanting to know how the market is for my major. However if someone asks and wont answer the same question or attempts to boast about their being 'better' than mine then we have a problem.
