if you drive the car for longer trips (frequently) you can get away with it - e.g. I never trickle charge the battery in my Accord beater and it's fine - it's cars that sit or used for shorter trips, which is most ZL1 garage queens

My battery died the day after my B2B warranty was done. Thankfully my dealer was good about it and replaced mine for free.
17,000 miles / 3 years is all my battery lasted.

I know I’m bumping an old thread here.
Just wanted to mention that I’m almost to 5 years on my original battery. Voltage looks good so far. I am wondering if having the battery location in the trunk reduces heat, thus increasing longevity. |

The 19' must be a good year, still on original batt.

I replaced my battery when its measured CCA dropped below 440 A (from the original 760) after a bit less than 5 years. The engine still started every time and there were no "electrical gremlin" codes at all, but the crank became more laborious, especially on cold starts.

It could but I had a 2012 135i (purchased new) that had the battery in the trunk, in the spare tire location. It lasted barely 5 years before it had to be replaced.

I rarely drive mine (it's at 2300 miles after nearly 2 years of ownership). I always start it up at least weekly, though. If it has been several days since the last start up, it cranks over slowly and the visor camera doesnt come on. After driving it for 10-15 min or so, if I shut it off and restart it, it fires up easily and the camera is working again. Only issue I've had with this car, and the dealership has told me it is just the way these cars are. They said if you don't drive them regularly, the battery drains from all the electronics. Seems like BS, but the battery hasn't actually died on me yet

The dark current in our cars is high. Doing the math will show that a fully charged healthy battery will completely discharge in about 8-10 weeks. Also, the AGM charging logic is overly conservative (such logic prevents overheating the battery during charging). This combination results in the batteries slowly draining and charging too slowly while being driven, and not retaining a healthy state of charge. Solution: Put a tender on it. |

I replaced mine with an Antigravity Lithium battery right after I purchased the car, its still going strong 3 1/2 years later.

My car is a '20, but built in 07/19 (purchased the end of that September).
I'm still on the original battery, but have had it on an Optima trickle since about 11/19, because when I connected it the first time, I noticed the charge state registered something like 50%. Admittedly - I hardly drove it by that time, so it wasn't getting much recharge from running. I still have less that 4K-miles on it now, but just keep it on the trickle almost all of the time. Sometimes I'll give it a break for about a week, but not, usually longer than that. I pulled this battery for the first time recently for a little project, and I thought this was a lightweight battery... I assure you it is not...

My original is still going strong right at 7 years, but I do put it on a trickle charger if going to sit any length of time. However, I'm going to be proactive and plan to replace it this weekend.

Modern cars are now very heavy in electronics. So for those that hardly drive their ZL1s or have to store them during the cold parts of the year, a battery tender is going to be needed for prolonging the battery life.
BMW tries to sell it to everyone that the car and battery are "connected" so that the car can regulate the battery voltage just right for the battery as so that it'll last for at least 10 years. Which is a bunch of BS since mine lasted barely 5 years. Then you have to buy the exact battery and then pay someone to "pair" the battery ($150 or more) to the car so it'll see its a new battery. Thank goodness American cars aren't likle that...... |

My 2017 is still on its original battery, and still going strong. It sits on a trickle charger over the winter. I probably jinxed myself. That said, my 2018 GMC Canyon is also on it original battery, as well.
