Is that your car? and what are the wheels on top? did they get the lead of the calipers.

I saw this on an SS at the dealer this morning, no lead weights stacked on it.

Is this the official fix for the brakes? Does anyone else have this on their SS?

It's on a 79000 car? Mine is a lot lower then that and is still shipping. I hope mine has them if it means no weights.

Those are lead weights. They are coming from Brembo like this now. I don't have VIN ranges but it went like this:
- Pre-production (test fleet) cars - mostly no weights - First month or so, ~ 1/2 lb stick-on lead weights, silver, installed in Oshawa - Next couple months, same amount of weights, same type, installed by Brembo before sent to Ajax - Next couple months, weights now come painted dark gray / black, same weights though - A few weeks ago, switched to these style weights

At least it looks a little more high tech then the original stick on's.

I still dont get why these calipers need any weights its just stupid. Brembo knows how to design a caliper and if there is brake pad chatter its in the spring design I would assume.
Still a bandaid and I never saw this on any car with Brembos before. I am taking my weights off after they get painted just to see what happens. |

I used to do this when I worked for Toyota. We used to put stick on weights on the backing plate of the drum brakes on Sienna minivans. They're supposed to help stop squealing by absorbing the noise/vibration. It didn't work on the Sienna and it doesn't stop squealing on the Camaro either

Used to dampen harmonic resonance. (stop the squeel)

This is exactly what I said they would do to resolve it. GM needs to give me a job.

Hello!

That will certainly make getting an aftermarket rim a little more interesting...

Can anyone tell me how far this projects from the top of the caliber? I'm considering other wheels and this will be important as to whether I go with them or not. Thanks.

This looks just like the same solution for most current Porsches. There are counterweights attached to the pad back plate to shift the natural frequency lower, damping a particular harmonic vibration. I don't know for sure which VIN had the change, but we might be able to research it. Data eventually flows downhill.

do the weights have to be on the top of the caliper or can they be hidden on the back? if they are just there to change the mass of the caliper therefore dampening the resonance it shouldn't matter where they are located... should it?

Location will definitely affect damping. Both geometry and mass distribution influence natural frequency. I would bet good money that they would have hidden them if they could have gotten away with it.

OK,so when ordering aftermarket wheels this will effect the diameter of the wheel you choose? Does it make the calipers wider/thicker so they sit closer to the "spokes" of the wheels?
TIA |

I saw the new caliper yesterday on a car around vin 75400, I forgot the exact number.

The weights don't change the spoke clearance at all. They are on top of the caliper body, so a wheel with a very large drop center would need to be checked for barrel clearance. However, it is very unlikely to create a problem.

Two more questions....
1)From what others have said i assume that the new weights are actually part of the pads?? The reason i ask is because i am about to have a custom 18x4 rim made for use as a spare tire.If it fits my car now, it may not fit later if the weights are part of the pads? If the weights are part of the caliper im good to go. 2)if the weights are part of the pad back can they me machined off (work in a machine shop)? If my current pads work w/o them i see no reason why i need them later especially if they interfere w/the wheels TIA |
