brake dust

Is this normal? I wash my baby regularly and the brake dust build up is awful. It is a pain to keep the car looking good. This is my first venture into a true "fast" car; (ex-mustang owner). So my question is because of the size of the brakes and or compound of the pads, is this normal? If so, is there a product that helps keep the brake dust from sticking to the wheels (like car wax helps keep a car looking clean)?

Yeah these brakes are dirty

You could switch to a set of HAWK pads. They seem to help out.

Well, new Hawk Ceramic pads and new Stillen drilled/slotted rotors in Jan, so we'll see... hate the dust! :(

Hawk Ceramic pads will cut down on the dust a lot but you will sacrifice some braking power compared to other high performance pads like the Hawk HPS. Another option is the Porterfield R4S pad. It's pricier than the Hawk pad, but it gives a bit more bite and performance vs. the Hawk Ceramic, and lower dust than the Hawk HPS.

The GT500 guys have the same Brembo calipers and also have problems with excessive brake dust from the factory pads. Many of them use the R4S....others use the Hawk Ceramic.

Yes, The midnight silver wheels do conceal the brake dust more so than the polished wheels. I can actually go a few days without wiping them with wheel detailer. When I do wipe them down (rather than washing the car), I'm amazed at how dirty the towel gets because so much of the dust blends in with the gray color of the wheel.

Ok some help!! How do you remove the brake pads?? I assume you need to remove the 4 E bolts and then take the pads out. This correct? If so, how do you get the last e-bolt out without taking off the connecting brake line?? I'm not changing the brake llines right now as they're not in yet...

Thanks!
Michael J.

If you've never went from regular pads to ceramic pads you'll ne very happy when you do. Lexus switched Bonnies out at no charge because of all the dust. I used to have to wipe hers lime every 3 days. Now she gets about a week and a half before it's really noticeable.

Just changed to the Hawk Ceramic pads yesterday - so just bedding everything in this week. One thing I am not happy about these pads is that the OEM's - which are stamped Brembo - have low pad sensors (the little metal tabs that scrape the rotors) on Every Single pad - on ALL 4 corners! These Hawk's only have a SINGLE front pad with them on! I know you need to keep an eye on the pad wear, but it would be beneficial to have the idiot reminders on all 4 corners...IMO

Good info. Cause I'm one of those idiots who forgets to check.

Compared to my previous performance cars, the brake dust is very low on my Camaro SS.
