Pfadt Über-leicht development contest!

Good news everyone!

As we reported a couple of months ago, we have had an ultra-light shifter in the works for some time. After some revised engineering, and a bold new material choice, we have arrived at the Pfadt Über-leicht Shifter you see below!

As expected, like most everything else on the car, the shifter is no exception. The OEM shifter weighs in at ~2.375 lbs with knob. The Über-leicht? Try a scant .875 lbs.

Throw reduction on this version comes in at ~25%, while we engineered the gate spacing to remain the same.

So heres the lowdown: We have 6 of these things just itching to get into peoples cars. And as a special consideration to you guys, we want them to be developed by people we know will give them the test miles they deserve!

So here is our proposed contest: Tell us why you think you should be a Pfadt development member, and the best 6 responses, will get to test out the lightest unit on the market, pro-bono. The only catch is that in return for this, we are expecting valuable feedback. We want to hear your impressions, and suggestions if any. We have run it in our own development car for quite some time now, and absolutely love it. But this is a very subjective component.

So I will open it up now, and we will close the running on 8/3. After that, we will make our decision, and post up with the winners.

So...I ask again...who wants to test one out? Post responses in this thread.

I should be a tester because I would give you valuable feedback. I do not hesitate to give you constructive criticism, as well as praise what positive things I do find about the shifter.

I also love your products!

I would be more than happy to help you with feedback for your product. I have been considering Hurst for a while now but still haven't pulled the trigger. I just clicked 18k on my LS3 in a year and a month so I drive quite a bit and a lot of it is around town. A few questions though...

Is the piece shown the only component to the unit?

What is the handle made out of? It gets pretty hot down here in Texas!

Do the winners get to keep the shifter as compensation or return it when we are done?

Thanks

I would very much like to try your shifter. I have wanted to install an aftermarket shifter since I took delivery. I will be willing to do step by step instructions with photos.

This is one bitchin' piece. Way to think outside the box on the material choice. I would love to test this piece out. I have always liked the delrin stick handles used in race cars so this would be right up my alley.

I have been a Mechanical Engineer designing products in the automotive industry for the last 10 years doing work for both the OE's and aftermarket performance companies. Based on this experience I know I can give you thorough technical feedback and a complete report. I drive my SS hard everyday, participate in all the local SCCA Auto-X events, and do some road racing at Spring Mountain (with about 4-5 hours of track time coming up at the beginning of September). I have always done all my own installs and would have no problem documenting this one as I have done for dozens of magazine articles before.

I would be willing to promote this product, take photos with my SLR, take HD video with my Hero, and beat the hell out this part.

Thanks for this opportunity and consideration...

Shane

OK, here goes my attempt to show you why I should get one. Let's start with the simple fact that the government trusted me to fly a $300 million reconnaissance aircraft (really), so I would qualify as trustworthy.

Secondly, I drive my 2SS in Washington, DC (including the warzone that is SouthEast DC) daily to and from work. In the 12 months that I have owned my Camaro I have logged 21K miles year round daily driver (even through the blizzards we had this past winter). So I am VERY familiar with the feel of the stock shifter (which I feel is lacking in a number of areas).

Third, I may not have told you guys this before, but I am pretty darn awesome. I think it's due to the fact that I'm part superhero. Or at least I feel that way most days. So that has to count for something.

...and last, but not least, I am departing in early 2011 to Afghanistan for a 12 months. So between now and then I will be making sure I log a bunch more miles on my baby before I park her safely away in storage, and it would be nice to do that while evaluating one of your shifters! Especially since the stock shifter is by far one of my least favorite stock parts, and thus the reason that parts is high on my list of needed upgrades. I was on the fence between Hurst's short throw offering and MGW's short throw shifter. Maybe you can convince me that your design is the best?

My complaints about the stock shifter range from general loose/sloppy linear throw which contribute considerably to missed shifts to clunky feeling passing the gates, especially on the critical 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. I am looking for a more precise feeling, shorter throw shifter, but I am a bit concerned to see the effect of such a light weight shifter. Often times the momentum of a nice, heavy shift handle assists in the throw of the shifter.

Cheers,
George

I will PM you guys too. There are a lot of variables in these decisions, we REALLY appreciate the feedback, and all who have entered, even the late ones! We realize not everyone gets a chance to see this thread but we got enough people interested to make it hard to decide.

Thanks again to everyone involved.

To the winners:

Please email me at blair@pfadtracing.com with the following:

Full Name
Shipping address
Phone number

We will get them out to you shortly, with a few procedural requirements etc (nothing big) and have you on your way to getting a new shifter in your Camaro!
