The small gap is NEEDED. Leave the retainer with the boss down.

Turn your wheels right and left and you'll notice that the gap closes up.

I guess the gap is common, from other information I was told, and I will take the car for a drive and see if they drop.

The space you see is required for front strut articulation. The strut pivots / rotates in the bearing plate as the wheels are turn from left to right and right to left. The Earlier versions of this mount were problematic. The GTO and G8 use a rubber donut so to speak. They wear out and cause problems. The new mount in the Camaro ZETA II is superior. It is a steel cup / steel pot covered in rubber with a FRP snap in bearing and upper spring perch. we expect these new mounts to be trouble free for many miles.

The gap is normal. I had called Mike to ask him the same question. Just put the red dampening adjuster on your good to go.
