You did a GREAT job with the mods! I'm loving it. This is what I would have done had I actually waited for the vert.

Black Rally Stripes

OK... well, this is the first of my weekend of disasters...

I was very picky on the rally stripes I wanted- I do NOT like the curved outer edge near the mail slot that GM designed, so I was looking for a quality kit that ran with a straight (but still tapered) edge. I found exactly what I was looking for from a vendor on Ebay. After a few messages back and forth, confirming quality; he even agreed to extend the read deck lid stripes to give me some room to play with the convertible trunk. Furthermore; theres a few reviews on this site from this particular seller which were pretty good- so I ordered, at an unbelieveable price, too!

Anyway; on to installation.

This wasn't my first time doing stripes, so I was pretty comfortable (despite the kit NOT coming with instructions...) I also noted immediately the rear deck stripes did not appear any longer than stock coupe striping, so despite our conversations, and my multiple "notes to seller" on the auction/pay-pal, I didn;t get the extra. Which turned out to be OK, as the vert deck lid is shorter than the coupe anyway.

If anyones else has done or seen the stripe kits- the hood edge near the windshield is cut at angles to fit the raised cowl. I lined the first stipe up according to the edges (which, 3 of the 4 angles lined up perfectly, while one was waaaay off...) After about an hour of work, I had it on, bubble free, and looking good (including the trimming I had to do at the windshield.)

On to the second stripe- Lined it up again according to the (similarily, however not as bad) angled windshield piece and noticed- SHIT: the center line isn't straight! I had about a 1.5" gap in the top between the stripes, opening up to about a 2.5" gap at the nose! I tried "gently" removing the first stripe to reapply, but it had dried pretty well and stretched as I peeled it, rendering it unusable.

I'm gonna put this at 50%-50% blame. Clearly I shoulda lined them up better before applying, or at least before the final heat dry... definitely my bad. But the angles cut in the stripes were way off at the windshield...I was so concerned about minimizing that exposed paint line at the windshield, and lining that up, that I negated to ensure the center lined up all the way down.

LESSON LEARNED- you get what you pay for. I went "inexpensive" just to try it before getting them painted and I wasted time and money. Getting a quote now from the shop that painted/installed my GFX... give it about 6 months and I'll have them painted on...

K&N CAI

Well, this went a little better than the stripes, however not without another mild-to-major catastrophe...

For starters, I have a pic of the parts laid out beforehand. Being my car is white, I wanted to paint the air-box to match. Even this was more drama than expected... between dust, a "ghost" yellow showing up in one section(???) and an out-of-nowhere tropical storm blowing my freshly painted and drying part down the concrete driveway, I finally got it done. I also removed the K&N orange/red sticker from the tube (Goo Gone works AWESOME!)

Installation was EASY! I have a few pics along the way. The hardest part perhaps, was reaching and unclipping the vent tube. I tried getting a pick of that, but it's kinda blurry. Over all simple.

Only real problem came with intalling the fitting that connects the exhaust tube from the Polished pipe to the small plastic vent tube. The connector is plastic and screw into the pipe. Well, appearantly they were not matched well, as after trying, retrying and retrying again (to screw it straight into the pipe) I ended up applying too much pressure and snapped it off inside the tube. Now I had no way to remove the broken piece from the inner threads, and no way to connect the hose. After an hour or so of trial and error, I ended up rigging a Bic pen, some JB Weld, silicone sealant and Black Duct tape... viola- its connected! Other than that, piece of cake.

(Post con't...)

CAI Cont

Seems like I gained a lot of space swaping them out under the hood. Not sure why the factory plastic is so monsterously huge, (and I'm really losing attic space storing all this crap!)

Anyway, I notice absolutely nothing power wise... then again, I am still running stock exhaust until FM figures it out. And I'm not really punching it on a regular basis either to notice throttle response. Hopefully the MPG come up a bit.

As for sound- overall my exhaust tone sounds a little deeper now. I do notice (particularily with the top down) a deeper, louder growl under hard excelleration. I've heard at WOT it's supposed to scream, but haven't made it that far yet. Below are the final product pix.

I did a before/after video, but I really didn;t notice enough difference in the video to make it worth posting.

Got on it a bit today- really couldn;t notice a difference in accelaration or performance with the K&N, but I DID hear a very throaty, deep growl that i never heard before! That alone was worth the $275!!!!

Drago,

Followed your build and your review after 700 miles, and I am presumming you have a few more miles on it at this point.

I too was one who originally wanted a vert but pre-ordered not knowing when or if they would ever produce a convertible.

It seems from what I have read you have only had very minor issues and one being the tonneau cover. With that being said do you think it is more of a design issue or you becoming more familiar with the tonneau cover itself?

I look forward to hearing about your car in the future as I would like to see the longevity wear items on the vert like wind noise etc... I really like the way the car look and yours looks great.

Thanks!

Honestly, I really cant complain about anything other than the tanneau cover. Since I put washers in the posts, its become.easier to install, and given me a little.more room to slide it back (thus more room to tuck under the deck and presumably acute better.) Im still a little concerned everytime I drive at hwy speed about it coming loose again, so far so good though. There are still wind ripples in it, but I guess that's to be expected with fabric. I still think they could have designed it better- maybe an additional clip or 2 in the rear... just my. 02 tho.

I'll be driving it to Pony Wars II next month, so that should tack on.a few hundred more.miles. I might do an addition to my original review/post to.address anything new coming up. But so far, so good!

Kev,

Thanks for the info. Never really thought about the issue of the tonneau before this especially since I never have owned a Vert before but definitely something to think about, but I guess it would kinda suck bad for it to come flying off at highway speeds down the interstate. Reminds me of the Mayhem commercial for Allstate. Would be just my luck.

Maybe it is just a minor issue that GM will have to work out especially since it is a new model. Have you tried contacting member " Chevrolet Custmoer Service" here. He may be able to help and know if anything is in the works as far as a fix for this, just a thought.

My babys in surgery as we speak... black.gloss rally stripes getting painted. Double sand/coating to completely blend into clear coat, ie= no ridges.

Painter just called to tell me molding around convert top (attached w double sided tape) may break during removal... I need evryone on C5 to say a collective prayer for my car- got Pony Wars next weekend, can't afford a broken part right now!

Stripes in the works...

Gotta love my body-work friend at Atlantic Collision- he does a hell of a job! Working on my stripes now. This is the first coat on the hood, you can see the sanded portion on one of the pictures, absolutely NO edges/ridges!

Looking amazing so far, the black is a super sleek, high gloss shine! (Pix don;t do any justice, from a camera phone)

Stay tuned for the finished priduct!
