Thumbs up Which Would You Rather Have?

With all the ongoing discussion regarding a possible "Z/28", slotted price-wise between a 2SS and a ZL1, one of the great debates is "what engine"?

There's a camp that prefers a "hot" LS3, with perhaps 450 hp/440 ft-lb. There's a camp calling for a wet-sump'd LS7, with 505 hp/470 ft-lb. Assuming a final price "difference" of about $5,000 in favor of the "hot" LS3, which would YOU prefer?

1) "Hot" LS3 @ 450/440 minus $5,000

2) "Wet" LS7 @ 505/470 plus $5,000

EDIT:

Sorry folks!!! In the Poll, Option 1) should read 450 hp/440 ft-lb!!

Damn dyslexic fingers...

Well I voted for more horsepower...cuz the poll says 540 LS3!
The write up explains it better at 450.... Dang it can I vote again for more HP?

Guess I voted too quickly

"Hot", "Cold", "Wet", "Dry" doesn't mean anything to me except for the numbers 440hp. vs 505hp. Duh!!!!!
Also, doesn't the LS7 come with forged internals?
I've said it all along, rather pay GM $5k, than to have to do it myself (achieve more power w/ engine safety). And, although I don't care about warranty issues (post mods). This way those that want high HP#'s, without having to mod, can keep their warranties intact.

I agree with Calbert1999.....and the fact that the LS7 is more in keeping with the 1st gen's high reving 302.

Neither, I want the Z/28 to come with a Gen V V8. I doubt it would cost much more than an Ls3, but it should have power similar to the LS7.

This poll I assume is for a 5Gen Camaro. Gen V, not gonna happen in a 5Gen. If we're gonna see a 5Gen Camaro it has to be an LS7 as nothing else will be available that fits the bill.

To bring an LS3 up to the internal hardware specs of an LS7 would cost what? And then forget the factory warranty.
And being able to say you have a 427 in your Z28 would be AWESOME!!!

I wouldn't be so sure about that, since the 2014 MY, VF commodore is coming to america with supposedly a Gen V V8. I don't see why GM wouldn't do a 5th gen Camaro Z/28 with a Gen V V8, especially when you consider that both are Zeta 2 vehicles. Beside I highly doubt GM gen IV V8s will even be in production past 2014, heck the new trucks will be out before that and they will have a Gen V V8.

And changed the results to reflect your intent:
-1 for LS3
+1 for LS7

Which one? The small truck engine? The big truck engine? The mainstream performance V8? A high powered forced induction mill? A race bred naturally aspirated unit? You can bet that there will be gen V's filling all those roles. So if you don't think there will be a Z28 until the gen V engines debut, thats fine. Just remember that the SS & ZL1 won't simply keep going on and on with their old gen IV's while the Z28 gets a gen V.

That is also true, but if the Z gets a Gen V engine in MY 13 or 14, i am sure that the SS will get a 5th also, maybe just a smaller or larger CID depending on where GM wants the Z/28 to fit in the order. I am still a hold out for the Gen V in the fifth gen camaro Z/28! You should still update the poll for us hopefuls!!

I voted for LS7. It would be great if the Z28 is gunna be offered with a 427ci. motor and not be more than $50k. also with the Z28 having a 427 the Boss would be demolished!

But I doubt that GM is gunna offer the LS7 to the Z28 (if theres really one coming) because it gunna make the cost of the car go up with the track ready suspenion.

I think GM is gunna put a Dry sump 450hp LS3 and track ready suspension in the Z28 to keep the cost in between the SS and ZL1.

But a High Revving engine would be a much better choice.

Don't detune the LS7! Nobody who wants a Z/28 wants anything less than the best.

On GM Performance Parts there is the LS376/480, which is basically a cammed LS3 and it produces 480 hp/475 lb-ft of torque and comes with a 2 year warranty. I want the best LS3 rather than an LS7 that is not as good as it should be. Imagine the idle if that engine came stock...and look at that torque curve!!!

And just to compare the two (hp) approximate:

RPM - LS376/480 vs. LS7

2000 - 100 vs 120
3000 - 240 vs 225
4000 - 370 vs. 320
5000 - 450 vs. 430
6000 - 480 vs. 500

Average - 328 vs. 319

Of course if they don't detune the LS7 its the engine I would want...but what are the chances of that?

How about a more balanced car one designed for road track. Small Engine (v8) standard shift only, but balanced for road track heavier sways and springs, lighter wheels, cts-v brakes.

$5,000 for 55 HP? No thanks.

But even worse the difference between the 2 crate prices is more that $7,000 not $5,000.

So if you figure in the 480 hp LS3 version, The difference is still more than $7,000.

So $7,000 for 25 HP. Any takers? The LS7 does not make sense in the Camaro.

And the LS3 and LS376/480 are within a few hundred of the same price for a 50hp gain. If the Z/28 starts around $40g, then that leaves about 5 or more thousand in the price tag for further upgrades such as suspension part upgrades, tire upgrades. Not to mention the LS376 has more horsepower available under 6000 rpm than the LS7. That's not to say 1-2k can't be spent to allow the LS376 to rev a little higher...maybe 7000 or 7500 rpm? This theory...it is crazy - but is it crazy enough?

Folks, a 7.0 Liter V8 with 505/470 specs HAS AN RPO CODE...LS7

A "hot-cammed" 376/480 DOESN'T...

You don't just snap your finger and install an LS3+ in an automobile and call it a day. DEVELOPMENT/CERTIFICATION/VALIDATION...CO$T$...

Now, take those co$t$ and add 'em to the crate engine costs...and, built in low volumes AS CERIFIED/VALIDATED, your piece-cost will rise...closer to the existing LS7 price...no?

Ergo, NOT $7,000 difference, but approx. $5,000...

If this "not-for-highway-use" LS3+ was "such a great deal", then why isn't it already in a Corvette...or Camaro?

Btw, the LS6 readlines at 7k just like the LS7 does so thats nothing new. I vote for the Z06 LS7. i would take that all day long. A cam and headers in a Z06 makes 550rwhp.

Is it just the Z28 section, or do too many people just jump in without reading any thread before they answer?

It's not just the Z/28 thread, it's all threads in the forum. That's why there's so many multiple same answers and picture posts.
