WTF? These two statements completely contradict each other...?

The Z28 I knew would be shelved for a while, the convertible I didn't see coming. I wonder how that affects some of the guys that were waiting on the convertible. There were a couple of senior members that I recall.

The 4 cyl. Camaro, yeah great idea when were at $4 per gallon but with the incredible mpg on the V6, no worries on working on that.

GM is making smart moves, they need to recover.

GM to shelve Z28 and Convertible model!

Not sure if this has been posted yet guys but CRAPOLA!

GM shelves Camaro convertible, Z28

4-cylinder engine option is also on hold

Jamie LaReau
Automotive News
March 23, 2009 - 12:01 am ET

DETROIT — General Motors has delayed indefinitely the Chevrolet Camaro convertible and Z28 high-performance variant to save cash, sources say.

GM also has tabled plans to add a four-cylinder engine version of the Camaro. GM is starting to ship the Camaro to dealers this week.

Insiders say executives hope to restore the convertible to GM's product plan. GM originally had wanted to launch a convertible in 2010 and bring out the Z28 soon afterward.

"Neither one has been outright canceled," says Terry Rhadigan, a Chevrolet spokesman. Rhadigan said GM will seek to bring out the convertible in 2011.

The Z28 was to have challenged two rival performance muscle cars — the Shelby GT500 version of the Ford Mustang and Dodge's Challenger SRT8.

Plans for a four-cylinder engine for the Camaro lost appeal as gasoline prices dipped and the Camaro scored well on federal fuel-economy tests.

Last year, Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said GM was considering the same four-cylinder engine for the Camaro that GM uses in the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters. The 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection engine is rated at 260 hp in those cars.

Camaro fuel economy
ENGINE CITY HIGHWAY
V-6 auto. 18 mpg 29 mpg
V-6 man. 17 mpg 29 mpg
V-8 auto. 16 mpg 25 mpg
V-8 man. 16 mpg 24 mpg
Source: EPA

Gene Stefanyshyn, GM's vehicle line executive for performance cars, said cheaper gasoline played a role in shelving the smaller engine.

"We're looking at it. We don't have anything approved," Stefanyshyn said at a press event here last week. "But with gas $1.78 a gallon, we have to weigh where we put our poker chips."

Another source familiar with GM product plans confirmed that the four-cylinder for the Camaro is dead for "the time being."

Not only have fuel prices leveled out, but GM surpassed its own estimated highway mileage rating of 27 mpg for the V-6 Camaro. The EPA last week rated that vehicle at 29 mpg in highway driving.

The strong fuel-economy performance of the 3.6-liter, 304-hp V-6 lessens the need to offer a four-cylinder engine, sources say.

GM also offers a 6.2-liter V-8 in two versions, making 400 hp and 426 hp.

GM began building the Camaro, which starts at $22,995, including shipping, on Monday, March 16. GM estimates that it will take until May or June to fill the 14,000 sold orders in hand.

Future of Convertible and Z28

In today's issue of Automotive News...GM says the convertible and Z28 are "Shelved". It mentions the convertible may be built in 2011 but no mention of the future of the Z28.

Automotive News, MotorTrend, National Enquirer....regardless of the source, you can count on THIS as the OFFICIAL STATUS:

THE CONVERTIBLE IS STILL BEING TARGETED AS A 2011 MODEL

Wow Scotty...I thought Automotive News and Motor Trend were a little more cedible than the National Enquirer?

The "delay" is as a result of cash flow. Do you really think we will see the convertible in 2011? You have more faith in GM than I do.

I don't know....I read some pretty good stuff in the Enquirer!!!

The convertible was tabled, and shortly after the Chicago show, they said it was back in line to be a 2011.....and yes, I know anything GM is ALWAYS *Subject to change...but I did get an update minutes ago. So keep thinking POSITIVE!

... And keep bringing us information Seeing that 'vert' from last week makes me think more and more that that model isn't really that far away from becoming a reality. I'm almost willing to be it's more ready than most think. GM's gotta' play their cards just right so I think as long as they can turn around in a timely fashion, we'll see these cars follow not long after.

Things are only going to get more interesting

2011 model? So we'll see it in 2010 still? Lol. So confusing isn't it?

I guess we're going to have a super-long 2010 model year run. That makes me wonder how inflated 2010 sales are going to be seeing as how it's going to be almost two years, not just one. Regardless, hopefully we'll see at least one of these delayed models in the fall of '10 as 2011 models.

Lets see how the coupe sells after all of us enthusiasts have gotten ours, this will also help in determining when and if the vert comes tomarket. If the coupe flops it will have zero chance. This might indeed be the last hoorah for a V-8 Chevrolet pony car!

I HOPE not but know you're right. It seems like we're getting pretty favorable reviews so hopefully that remains the same and we get some good press. The fuel ecomony from the V6 helps but if we could get some good publicity, I have a feeling Camaro will sell itself.

It was after the Chicago Show that I was told the Convertible was back in business, targeted as a 2011.... I check again today (out of Camaro love...) and that is still the word I get.....Not sure who their "source" is...but until MY "source" says otherwise, I'm *alls to the walls, top down and wild in 2011" !

no matter what the gas prices are, a 4 cyl camaro is a bad idea. GM has already been through testing of a few different engines & they all came back with the same results - no economy gains over the V6 & ridiculously underpowered feel.

i'm willing to bet it's pretty close. why else would they openly display a test mule at the factory on production-start day? besides... drop tops rarely come out at the same time as the coupe.

it won't really be that much longer - about 3 months. regular 2010 cars should start production sometime in june/july.

My point was the source scotty is referring to says 2011 model. Well 2011 models come out in 2010. So...a year and couple months from the coupe? Lol.

maybe this is a marketing strategy. letting out some info that might swing buyers to the coups instead of waiting for the vert or possibly the z28. Anything is possible....
