my dad WAS with me, that's the thing.

This guy is ridiculous, trying to charge me $1200 to replace my fuel pump. He said that the pump itself is over $500 which I know is total BS. So, I'm going to be trying this myself, hopefully with the help of a couple mechanic friends. There's no way in hell this guy is getting $1200 of my money to replace a $150 part.

Which by the way, it is my fuel pump that's going bad. also, one of my metal fuel line (the one that connects to the end of the fuel filter) is twisted. So I need to get my car back home so I can replace it over my 4 days off

Dude, that whole thing just sucks! Shouldn't take you that long to do. Hopefully the line to fuel filter isn't to jacked up. And of course doing it yourself you know what you end up with. Sorry you had to waste all that time getting a runaround. If there's anything I can help w (I guess from this far away just moral support ) let me know and good luck.

Probably wants a million labor hours for pulling the rear end and tank to get to it. Dude sounds like a tool.

On a 4th gen, carefully cut 3 sides of a square in the trunk area and then bend it up like a trap door to access the fuel pump (top of the tank) so it is an easy R&R. Pump is $115 or so. Make SURE to replace the fuel filter at the same time also.

Disregard that Remy. I know it's a pain, but just do it right and drop the tank.

I'm getting a second opinion on it before I do anything. I have a friend who has replaced the fuel pump on a 4th gen a few times. So if it is actually the fuel pump he's going to help me out so that I don't have to pay the million dollars worth of labor.

If anyone wants to give me their thoughts I'll list my symptoms.
A week ago or so I noticed my engine would sputter slightly while idling. After about a week I started having some hesitation on acceleration, but it was only at very low rpms, once it got above 1K it would accelerate normally. On Friday night on my way back from work I started it and once I started to pull out the engine just died. I got it to start right back up and it was fine. Sunday on my way to work I couldn't get it to stay started. Every time it fired up it wouldn't stay up. If I revved it the engine would stay o. Till I let off the gas. So we left it and Monday morning it started first try no problems so I drove it straight to this shop. That's my timeline for ya, feel free to chime in guys

crank sensor? i had a Beretta with direct ignition and it went through similar and then one day would not start at all. turned out to be a $13 sensor.

sensor tells the ignition system when cylinder #1 is at TDC (top dead center) and fires a spark, the rest follow in sequence.

Sounds like the MAF failed. Unplug the connector and see how it runs. It will default to open loop all the time and get crappy fuel economy but will let you drive and determine if it is the MAF.

Any CEL? Also, if the car is a sweet rare model drop the tank and do it right, but the trap door mod saves hours.

The buddy I was talking about earlier literally just brought up crank sensor.. I feel like that should be my first step. He has a scanner and is going to scan my car tomorrow after work.

Also no CEL, I just had it tuned a few weeks ago too and the MAF was working fine, however, I may have to check it out again.

Thanks everyone for the input!

crank sensor is easy and cheap, unlike the fuel pump.

Just wondering, how old are your O2 sensors? If it's not the crank sensor, check to make sure the O2 sensors doesn't "jingle" when you shake it next to your ear. If it does, it needs replaced.
