The Z/28 option code was introduced in December 1966 for the 1967 model year. It was the brainchild of Vince Piggins, who conceived offering "virtually race-ready" Camaros for sale from any Chevrolet dealer.[1] This option package was not mentioned in any sales literature, so it was unknown to most buyers.[2] The Z/28 option required power front disc brakes and a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. It featured a 302 cu in (4.9 L) small-block V-8 engine, 3" crankshaft with 4" bore, an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary Holley carburetor of 780 cfm. The engine was designed specifically to race in the Trans Am series (which required engines smaller than 305 cu in (5.0 L) and public availability of the car. Advertised power of this engine was listed at 290 hp (216 kW). This is an under-rated figure.[2] Chevrolet wanted to keep the horsepower rating at less than 1 hp per cubic inch, for various reasons (e.g. insurance and racing classes). The factory rating of 290 hp occurred at 5300 rpm, while actual peak for the high-revving 302 was closer to 360 hp (268 kW) (with the single four barrel carb) and 400 hp (298 kW) (with optional dual-four barrel carbs) at 6800-7000 rpm. The Z/28 also came with upgraded suspension, racing stripes on the hood and trunk lid, '302' front fender emblems on the early cars, and 'Z/28' emblems in late 68 & 69. It was also possible to combine the Z/28 package with the RS package.

Only 602 Z/28s were sold in 1967, along with approximately 100 Indianapolis Pace Car replicas.[3] The 1967 and 1968 Z/28s did not have the cowl induction hood, optional on the 1969 Z/28s. The 1967 Z28 received air from an open element air cleaner or from an optional cowl plenum duct attached to the side of the air cleaner that ran to the firewall and got air from the cowl vents. 15-inch rally wheels, were included with Z/28s had while all other 1967-9 Camaros had 14-inch wheels.
The origin of the Z/28 nameplate came from the RPO codes - RPO Z27 was for the Super Sport package, and RPO Z28, at the time, was the code for a Special Performance Package.

Later when the SS model was dropped the Z28 became the ultimate Camaro from Chevy, until the SS returned in the 90's first as a SLP conversion then Chevy took it back over, it was then as it is right now the Top Performance Camaro.

and neither of the numbers you quoted from 2001 are accurate. both were under rated and closer to the vet hp of the time. also you forget about SLP's involvement in the SS for the 4th gen. Z28 was in production. SLP came to GM with the SS idea and GM went with it. making SS top dog. but of course back in the 60's it all depended on what you considered top dog. a car that could handle and keep up with most SS's of the time in a straight line while leaving them in the dust once you go to some curves or just the 1320.

I believe '01 and '02 non-Ram Air-type cars were rated at 310 horse' and the Ram Air-types were rated at 320. Then the SLP CB added like 7 or 8 on top; though, the late appearing Blackwing lid for the SSs weren't advertised in anything I've seen to give more power, but I believe it did.

'monkey is right though. Stock LS1s were putting down an average of close to 300 to the tire. My brother's '02 with 2.73s, CB, and a lid put down 327 and mine, equipped with 3.23s, MAC mids', and crummy tune put down 334. Both were autos'. Later, with LTs, converters, and good tunes, we were putting down from the mid-350s to the mid-360s. Those LS1 cars were no joke in the power department. Now... the 7.5" rear end was another story...

It's not the dealer's fault...the program they use is called ADP...same one I use at work. All you do is put the VIN in and it brings up the car info automatically. Someone at the software company made the mistake; I'll bet if I put that VIN in my computer here at work the same thing would come up.

What happened was that GM did away with the SS package all together in 1973. Up until then the z28 was top dog. The SS cars that were above the Z28 were cars built through a partnership with SLP in 1996. Most of the time they were really no different power or handling wise if you bought the base SS package, a whopping 15hp is not a big difference to me. You could add exhaust and suspension packages but it cost much more.

Z28 was not the base car with SS being an upgrade in the 1st Gens. That happened with the 4ths. Z28 was top dog in the early cars and highly sought after now much more so than an SS.

One of the Volvo Dealerships tried to sell me a used 2011 ZL1....lol. They will do what ever they think that they can get away with out here. I think its because this state has one of the largest populations of millionaires in the US, and they know that one of them will pay the outrageous 10,000 to 15,000 markup that they are trying to put on them

I am taking mine in on Monday for multiple issues(Transmission grinding, ground effect misalignment, paint blemishes, fascia warpage, exhaust rattle) It will be interesting to see if I walk away with a 2011 Z28 as well.
