10 and 12 bolt are how many bolts hold the ring gear to the carrier and thus relative strength.

For standard GM products:
10 bolt (early musclecars) 8.20", later 10-bolts are 8.50"
12 bolt is 8.875"
Ford is 9.00" (vs 9 bolt)
The monster Chrysler Dana 60 was a whopping 9.75" ring gear.
