Dash Cam in Camaro
I recently had a friend that was involved in an accident that was NOT his fault and the other party bacially lied the a@@es off and the result was that he ended up getting the rap, the blame, the fines, and all the nice things that go along with it.
That got my wheels turning....this could have been avoided if he had some kind of proof of the driving situation, ie...a dash cam. The technology has finally caught up to us where there are many financially viable options that are easy to use. I picked up a GoProHD Hero2 for about 300$ and mounted it on my dash. I have to say, it's freaking awesome!!! Its super easy to use, very easy to pull the video off of, and a 32gb card will hold 6 hrs of video at a very good quality. The camera also has tons of other uses, so it's not like it's stuck on the dash, it looks like it's going to be alot of fun to own. My friend, had he even been able to prove that he hadn't deviated from his lane would not have taken the hit for this accident, so it doesn't really need to cover all angles, just being able to show how you were (or weren't) driving at the time could be worth its weight in gold. I took a quick cap of what the FOV is and to illustrate the video quality. I think this is going to be fun. ![]() Hope this picture posts okay, it's been a while since I linked a photo. I know the fisheye is pretty severe, but I get almost window column to column coverage with this mode. (170 degree) I have an autosync setup on my PC, when I get home I hook up the camera and it automatically cuts and pastes the content of the card. I don't have to do anything. I figure I'll keep the videos for as long as my storage capacity allows, which should be pretty much indefinitely. If I ever needed to prove where I was, or more importantly, wasn't..I have those vids on my computer.... |

This is pretty cool, but there are other devices that you can use specifcally for this.
Can't think of the name, but a buddy of mine uses a small camera mounted to the top of the windsheild and it records automatically, re-writing over the oldest video so its kind've like a dvr in that respect. Video isn't HD, but it doesn't need to be, and that saves a ton on disk space.

Yes, I agree, I wish GoPro would make a purpose built Dash Cam, but this one has so many other uses as well.. With the storage growing so fast, it's going to be interesting to see what comes out in the near future...
The quality is really astounding though..the Hero2 has an 11 mp sensor in it... |

I need this because no one believes my late night driving stories. The accident thing is a great perk I didn't think of.

I just ordered one from Rearview Safety with a second camera for the rear window. It will record front and rear at the same time. It will record continuous even when parked. This gives it a security benefit as well. It shows video, speed, GPS map, and 3D g forces during playback.
What motivated me to get this is the citation I got a couple days ago. I drive through a intersection every morning that is controled by no less than 8 policemen. It's an entrance to a chemical plant that has a maintenence turnaround going on. I'm working in another plant several miles away all night. I went through this intersection about 6 am just like I do every morning. This time one of the cops came and pulled me over. She was the one waving her flashlight over her head signaling what i would interpret as hurry up. She ask me why I accelerate through the intersection every morning. I expalained that yes, I do accelerate after leaving the intersection and have past all the comotion. She said I accelerate too fast. Then another cop pulls up and asks me the same thing but added, "Is there a problem?" I again said no problem, I just get back up to speed limit which is 55. He said I accelerate way too fast. I ask if there was something I did wrong that was on radar or on camera. He said "no but there will be next time." Then a third officer drove up and after about 20 minutes they decide he would be the one to write a citation for "Excessive Acceleration." After I got home and doing some research, the only thing I can find on accceleration in Texas is that it is no longer an offense since September 1, 2003. There is no mention of it in the Texas Transportation Code. I decided to get the black box DVR in case they want to start harrassing me after this. It won't be just there word against mine if there is a next time. I don't think I will have much problem getting this ticket trown out either.

Yeah...GoPro is the way to go, really.
I mainly use it when driving on scenic country roads, but I've thought about keeping it on for all driving. Just not that OCD about it, I guess
