GM has more than double the dealerships as toyota does. They sell about the same number of cars. Fewer dealers means more profitable dealers who don't need to squeeze every penny out of every transaction to survive. The list of advantages of closing dealers is a mile long. As a consumer we will have more assurance of working with professionals in getting the deal done, and car serviced. Not to mention GM will be able to have better oversight of the dealers

I'm still interested, but I want to see the dust settle before I order anything. Don't want to go to a dealer that is going to close.

IF they file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection (which is what I assume you're referring to), you won't have to worry about the above for a few reasons. Mainly: They're NOT going out of business. No matter what happens, that is an absolute. Whether you like it or not, they're too big to fail, and the gov't won't let that happen. So that means they will honor warrantys, and there WILL be parts available for repairs, etc.

Also, the US gov't is also honoring all GM and Chysler warrantys in a worst-case scenario.

I was just informed that many dealers in my area were handed yellow and red slips indicating GM's intentions. After reading the above article is seems true:
