Dealer talk

I went to the local dealership today to shoot the bull with a dealer to get some experience before hopefully purchasing in september. Well anyways after a while of talking about one of the camaros I asked "may i see the invoice for this car" and the dealer replied with "no, all that stuff is online on the internet you can go look at it there" Is this the response I should have gotten or was he being a no good sport? haha. Just curious because I would like to purchase my car at like 200 above invoice if possible. So What do you guys think? Thanks!

In my experience he should have pulled the invoice and showed you on the spot. If that happened to me I would walk out and find another dealer. Play your cards right and you should be able to get your car right at invoice and sometimes below.

How would I go about doing that? Do you have any tips for me? I have never negotiated with a dealer before. Today was my first taste of it.

Dont be afraid to walk away, there's always another car. You tell them what you want to pay, within reason of course. If they can't meet your demands, walk away. They don't want to lose a sale so they'll do what they can to accommodate you. If your not getting what you want, find another dealer. Another thing is do some research. Find out what camaros are going for in your area so you can get a comfortable price in mind and go in with your guns hot.

NEVER GO TO JUST ONE DEALER!!! You need to play dealer against dealer. In order to do this you need to do some homework. Here the Internet is your friend.
CHeck the local dealers sites for Internet specials. Check GMFAMILYFIRST for incentives and such. Get your best rates for financing from credit unions and banks. Take all this to dealer #1.

Sit down and have them work up a deal sheet for you complete with all discounts spelled out, include any financing deals, etc. Make sure that you let them know that you will be buying one of these cars TODAY. This is just a tactic. Tell them you need to walk off and think about it and ask for a copy of the deal sheet to review. If they wont provide it, take a picture with your handy cell phone

Go to dealer #2 and ask for their lowest price and have them start a deal sheet. Once you see the number compare it to the first deal. If it is higher, and if you dont get too excited at dealer #2 it will be, pull out the deal sheet from dealer #1. Tell dealer #2 that they need to beat the competitors deal by at least a grand and you will buy today (see the pattern here).

Now, you cannot go back and forth. This is a one time deal. If you go back to dealer #1 with the price from dealer #2 you will be given the same deal or worse, sticker, because they will know you are playing them. Dealer #2 is obviously should be the dealer you want to buy from. Good hunting.

Those are great ideas. There are 3 major dealerships here in town that I would be checking out. I will have to try these things. I am really hoping they will be willing to work a great deal for a new 2012 by the end of this september.

^^ This. And also, since they will be trying to get rid of their 2012's so they can put 2013's out, you should be able to get an awesome deal on one.

Go with your own info...this is dated but will be with in 100 or so add some for '13....also what they can show you for invoice is not always invoice:

Also if they know you are not buying tell Sept you are not going to get the best attention in the world...

I understand that but they should still show me the invoice right? Or at least be nice enough to talk to me because I am a potential buyer

Here's what I did and it worked very well. Go to edmunds.com or any other site that will give you invoice of all the options, and build your car. Know what the invoice is of every option so if something is added or subtracted from the one your're looking at you can calculate the change. Then deduct the 3% holdback from that final number. Somewhere between invoice and after holdback is what you are shooting for. Mine was sticker of 29190, invoice of 27818 and 26942 after holdback.

Then you get to negotiate a bit. They offer 28500, I counter low, they come back and we finally settled on 27500, then add , tax title, and license. Then between the order and arrival I hit on a 1000 private offer coupon that dropped it down to 26500. So I think I did pretty good. Others have probably done better, but I don't feel ripped off, and that was the feeling I was hoping for.

The key is RESEARCH!!!!. Get all your numbers together and make sure you stay reasonable. Don't come in at some ridiculously low offer you want them to take you seriously. If you're financing make sure your credit is good. Nothing worse than getting a good deal only to have the finance office find a surprise that spoils everything.

Good luck. Had mine a few days now, and the grin hasn't stopped yet.

Sorry....to answer your original question, you don't really need the invoice if you do your research. He was probably surprised you didn't already know that information. I didn't even ask my dealer but another dealer showed me and my numbers were dead on, so I was confident I had all my facts together before I even started negotiating.

Confidence and preparation and willingness to walk away when things aren't going your way, will take a lot of the bluster and "sales pitch" out of most salespeople. I walked away from Dealer 1, because he wouldn't negotiate at all, Dealer 2 lowballed his counter, so I got a better price than I expected.
