16k over MSRP

Hello everyone, I haven't been on the forums in a while. However, I have been prowling around for a ZL1 and found one in a local dealer.

I'm a young guy at 20 and I don't know if these guys thought I was stupid or were just trying to ride me for what they could. However, i'm neither stupid nor able to be taken for a ride.

Unless asked i'll leave the dealership name out of this, but I pulled up to the dealer earlier today because i searched the Chevrolet website for nearby ZL1's.

When I got out of my Camaro I immediately asked if they still had their ZL1 available for sale and if it was here yet.

They did, it was a black automatic with the forged aluminum wheels and sun roof. I started asking what they had included in the car's price and what they were willing to do if I started signing the paper work.

Then I was shown the scrap piece of paper scribbled in on it was "Market Adjustment Price" 70,000. I proceeded to inquire as to what that meant and why it was so high. The dealer told me "They are only making 200 of these cars for 2012 and we have number 24 VIN here. " after telling me this, i told him for 70,000 I rather buy a corvette, he then said "Well even z06's go for 120 thousand and the ZR1's go for 160,000. "

Now, correct me if I am wrong and completely ignorant to reality here, but I have read the chevrolet website up and down the Corvette's range from 50-110 for the TOP of the line Corvette. Not to mention the suggested MSRP price for the ZL1 is 54,000. 56,800 after gas guzzler, and then factor in destination charge, and what not. I was expecting to see it around 60k not 70k.

Are they trying to sell me Bull**** or is it really that high in demand that they can get it for that?

Go back, ask for the sales manager directly, and offer MSRP. If they say no, leave a card or contact information and tell them to call you when they change their mind.

Every dealer I've talked to that has a ZL1 in stock has marked it up, ranging from 5-20K. They always use the same excuse--they don't know when they'll get another one.

You can get anywhere from $10-15k(or more) off sticker on any new Corvette. So yes, that salesman was full of brown stuff.

That is pretty funny! I have VIN 218 and I know there are 2012 VINs over 1000! They do make ZR1 Corvette's that sticker for over $120K, but that doesn't mean that's what they are selling for.

Good luck in your search. You might be better off waiting for a 2013 at this point when they will surely make over 200!

Search elsewhere. Dealers have the right to add ADM to any vehicle, as you've discovered in this case. Dealers here are adding $15k ADM to the ZL1.

EDIT: I'm not saying I advocate adding an ADM, but that's how supply/demand work. "Someone" will pay it, if they want the car bad enough.

Wow! That's the largest load of crap I've ever smelled..and I live next door to cow farms! At most, the car should be around $60,000 with all available options. The "market adjustment" junk? It's just the dealer saying, "We want more money, so we're gonna try and get it." Don't ever pay that much for it. I'm from the upstate of SC and drove to GA to get mine at MSRP because most dealers in the state did a "market adjustment."

Also, how stupid is that dealership? There's already been near or over 1500 of these beauties made! They clearly don't know what the heck they're talking about. And I would check the VIN myself to see what number it is, because if they're so ignorant to be advertising what they are, they probably don't even know how to find that out.

The majority(95%) of owners bought at MSRP. You just hit a shark, a.k.a. ass**le. Mind you, some ford people want 20k more for the 13 shelby...I always speak with the sales manager when I buy a car. Salespeople are on comission...
It's better to order than to buy from stock in this case. They're probably making 1,700 2012's - it's at 1,600 right now. Good luck

I would like to see this 120k Zee Oh Six, and this 160k Zee Are One. I wouldn't even give that dealership the courtesy of not publically bashing them. You sir, are a better man than I am.

I just spoke with Sunshine Chevrolet in Fletcher NC down the road from Asheville, NC they have a black ZL1, M6 w/ polished wheels. They are wanting an $8,000 markup. They tried to tell my they were rare and only 200 are being made. I told them that there were already over 1,500 made and they said "oh we did not know" I just smiled.

Lieing salesman.....hmmmmm never heard that before! Just had a customer come in with his "new" 2012 SS with less than 200 miles on it.....said they gave him a super deal, I look and the front end has been wrecked and overspray and mask marks all over it and the drivers seat bolster already showing serious wear.

Run!

Buy a SS and put the extra$ into modding it into outperforming the ZL1 in every aspect for less$$.

A year or so ago I went to a dealer with my brother (a mustang fan) to look at a 5.0 2011 when they just came out. We went into the dealership and they had a brand new 2008 shelby GT500KR sticker said $54,000 to the right it had a sheet that said $89,000 which was crossed out and now listed the "value" price of $69,000. I laughed hard. I was saying are they insane? At that point the car was 3 years old and better versions have come out and they STILL are hoping to gouge someone. It wouldn't even be worth the original sticker price to me.

Go to Chevrolet's website and you can see for yourself what the MSRP's on the Camaros and Corvettes are. Dealer mark ups come from the dealerships not Chevrolet. Find another dealer as this one's smokin' crack.

Sadly dealerships are playing the "Supply Vs Demand" card right now with the ZL-1. There are so many people that want to buy the car and some dealerships are taking advantage of that. The MSRP is just that Suggested Retail price, but we all know that it goes up and stays there if people are willing to pay that price.

Now what's nice is, you can find a small to medium dealership that does not partisipate in the Market adjusted Value. These dealerships know that if they keep their prices at or close to MSRP they will get repeat customers.

People that pay a Market Adjusted Value price normally don't revisit a dealership. If they have enough money to spend 5 to 20 k Over the MSRP, then they can go anywhere to buy what they want. We are seeing that right now where people are traveling to the selling dealership, OR having the selling dealership ship the car to their location.

Here is a perfect example.

When I ordered my car, and it came up in the inventory of my dealership, they had over 15 calls asking about it. Now my dealership knew that there were people willing to pay well over MSRP. Heck one guy even offered to pay $8k Over MSRP on the car I ordered. Each person that called, the dealership would kindly say the car was pre sold and if my deal fell threw they would start calling those people to give them a chance. Well I didn't give them a chance to sell it to anyone else but me.
I doubt that a third of those people even lived in Arizona, and would never be a repeat customer. But since I have purchased 5 vehicles from this dealership, they valued me and showed it by offering the car at MSRP.

All I can say is, there are good quality dealerships that value their customers. Yes they are there to make money, but they are there also to keep a good relationship with the pass customers they have had.

My dealer only got one 2012 (still waiting to hear about 2013) and it sold locally at MSRP. I have a guarantee of no mark up on a 2013 convertible.

MSRP all the way bro. I've always been steadfast when dealing with stealerships. Never pay over MSRP on a car...period (I don't care if it's a Ferrari); as it just promotes this type of greedy behavior for future dealings. Call around like I did (even out of state) and make sure you get MSRP or less. The cost for a courtesy delivery (basically you buy out of state and have the car dropped shipped to your local dealership) is $200 or less and definitely beats paying any "MARKET ADJUSTMENT" of $5k or more. This is what I did when I was ordering my car back in November and now I have #80 sitting in my garage

It was sunshine chevrolet, not to name names, but you said it. I just am confirming it. I want to go back and let them know that not only am I no fool, but they are not going to get repeat costumers by lying and price gouging. (It may be foolish to even go back and talk to them, but idk i'm not worried about it. I think i'll just keep looking.)

There's a black on black ZL1 in my area that the dealer told me would be sold for MSRP. It's a manual though. PM me if you want the dealer's info.

wait a few months and when '13's are in full swing you will start to see a change of attitude and the prices will start to settle down, especially as the verts start to roll out..
