First Blindspot Mishap - CRAP!
Well it happened. This morning I fell victim to one of the many "hard to see" spots on my 1LT. Partially my fault, because I knew it was there - just mis calculated when to turn.
Driving away from an ATM and the concrete island between me and a drive thru teller lane got me. I heard the crunch/scrape of the rear right wheel contacting the edge of it. There are four lanes, the outside one being the ATM lane. Between lanes 1 and 2, and 2 and 3, there is a 3 foot high post at the end of the island (makes it easy to see when you are clear to turn). Between 3 and 4 (which is the driver's side of the ATM lane) there is no post. I turned too soon and... crunch! The worst part was, a guy who worked at the bank was standing outside at the time and saw it all happen. I stopped, got out, assessed the damage, looked at him and said - "It sure be nice if y'all had a post at the end of this concrete like you do on the others, so people can see where it is". His reply was, "That's a good idea". I could have freakin' knocked him through the wall. When I got home I scrubbed the scratches with a stiff fiber brush, lightly buffed with a damp SOS pad, and wiped it clean. It's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be but thought I would post this just as a reminder to new Gen5 drivers like me, especially with the RS 20" wheels. They do stick out just a little beyond where you think they are.

Here's a pretty good picture, after my clean up - didn't think to take a before picture. It could have been a lot worse. Just pisses me off though.

You're right - blindspot isn't the right word. It was driver error, but the oversized tires and fat fenders do take some getting used to.

Rubber band tires I like to call them. 18 inch wheels would be perfect for me. A little more protection, but I like the looks of a twenty inch wheel.

Me too, but I wish they were the same width front and back. That little extra width on the rear is what got me.

I'm thinking we should get together and have a mobile wheel refinisher come do all our wheels with curb rash......any interest in coming to our Stone Mtn get together and seeing if we can do a "group repair" and get a discount?

I always walk up to drive through ATMs. I just park first.
It's not worth the risk or the stress of having to try to "be sure" you didn't rub/scrape the tires or a rim that costs at least $300.00. You shouldn't drive your car in any kind of drive through. |

Well, Savannah has some guys that are active, N Florida has some active groups. Columbus used to have one, but not sure if they are active anymore or not. Check the threads in the SE region forum and PM some of them. What "major" city are you closest to?

I used the walk up ATMs because the Camaro is about a foot lower than the ATM screen.
![]() Same with fast food places. Also the large drinks are typically larger than the window. :p Unless I'm in my pickup, then I just drive on up and use the ATM as normal. |
