Fire extinguisher with custom bracket for around $30!

If you're like me and have performed any sort of mods to your car, the thought of a fire starting and not being covered by insurance because the car is no longer stock has probably crossed your mind.

I have also experienced a fire in one of my own cars years ago and put out two fires in other people's cars in the past ... so while we hope this never happens ... the fact is that it does.

So I asked for a fire extinguisher as part of my father's day gifts and just finished making a custom bracket to bolt it into the most practical location; under the front of the driver's seat.

The extinguisher I got was this one from Kragen's/O'Reilly's: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...e+extinguisher
It's designed for garage use and is B & C rated ... meaning it will work with fuel and gas fires as well as electrical. AND it's only $23.

Parts list:
  • 2' of 1" x 1/8" aluminum flat
  • Spray can of black paint (I used adhesion promoter (etch primer will work), three coats of black primer, and then two coats of clear
  • 2 x 6mm nuts and bolts
  • 4 x 4mm nuts and bolts (I chose stainless allen head with nyloc nuts)

I cut one piece of the aluminum 17" long and drilled 17/64" holes 1/2" from each end and then drilled 7/32" holes at 8 3/8" and 12 5/8"

I then cut two pieces 2.5" long and drilled 7/32" holes 1/2" in from one end and 3/8" from the other

I then marked 1" from one end on each on the short pieces and put them side by side in my vice with the 1" line at the top of the vice jaws. I then put a shifting spanner on them and bent them over to get the same angle on each.

File and sand any imperfections, clean with oil and wax remover and paint the pieces black, let them dry. Then bolt the shorter pieces (with the hole at the shorter length from the bend) underneath the long piece in the center holes. You can then bolt the extinguisher bracket onto the other ends of the short pieces:

Now you can bolt the bracket onto the holes at the front of the seat runners on the driver's side. Then clamp in the extinguisher.

Now move your seat back to your driving position and you're done!

Thank you for the design idea. I mounted mine in front of the passenger seat. It went great, found a fire extinguisher at Menards for $11. I did not paint it. Your royalty check is in the mail

Not when you mount on the passenger side. and the seat still moves forward and back.

This is why it is so important you should mount a fire extinguisher in your Camaro.

I made this up based on the materials I had and where I'd mounted the FE in the previous cars. Camaro was easier because the holes were already in the seat runners.

I have only hit the heel of my right boot (logger boots, big heel) on it a couple of times getting out, but driving, have not touched it once.

Thanks for the idea simon!
