LG Motorsports on track Road Race testing...

Hey guys,

We spent the weekend at Eagle's Canyon Raceway with our 2010 Camaro SS to validate current products and test new items on track under the hardest of conditions. Test ran Saturday 3-24-12. Outside air temp 76-78 degree's, sunny, track temp 88-90, slight breeze.

Modifications done to the car, producing 428 rwhp.
  • LG Super Pro Exhaust and mufflers
  • LG Velocity Cold Air intake
  • LG Sway bars
  • LG Drop Springs
  • LG Short shifter
  • LG full chassis brace system with Strut brace
  • StopTech brake lines
  • Hawk DTC60 pads

Initial thoughts from the track day prove that the car, even in a slightly modified setup is going to need better cooling on the engine, trans, and brakes. Look for new products in those areas in the coming weeks.

First results I am going to show is the LG 'Velocity' Cold air system. There have been a lot of threads about what is the best with testing on the dyno, hood open, hood closed, scoops, lids, boxes, ram air scoops. Some said ours was not a true cold air intake.....

Below you can see a screen shot during our test of a full 30 min session on track (last 6mins shown) with the car, and you can see the car is not cold at all. Engine coolant temp 235, oil temp over 300....all the time the air intake temp is only 2 degree's over outside. That my friends is a proven result of how a cold air system should work.

Not only has the Velocity shown the best results on the dyno, now you can see just how effective this works on track and providing the engine a much needed cold shot of air while being pushed to the limit. (video coming soon).

Once again, proving our products in real world on track testing.

If you guys didn't catch it, this same car finished 2nd in class (only behind the factory Ford team) during this year's One Lap of America!

Question: Was the OE washer bottle in place, and if not, was there a scoop (ADM/Apex/JRE.Other) installed?

Not to rain on your parade, but I'm fairly certain most CAI's that are any good will deliver temps close to ambient when MOVING. I understand the engine is hot, but you're doing 65 mph there, pushing a constant flow of fresh cool air into the engine compartment. I tested one here that was 2 deg. above ambient while driving down the freeway at 65 w/ the OE washer bottle in place. I would not go as far as to say "the best" results on the dyno, nice number though, none the less...

Nice looking unit though, I like the velocity stack. Nice piece. Nice finish in the race too!

Washer bottle was in place, and no there is no other scoop than the OEM piece in place.

Part of the point of this is that the intake has already proven itself on the dyno but with all of this hood open/hood closed talk...this was to show exactly what it will do, while driving even under the hardest of conditions.

No need for a differential cooler?

Too difficult for the little benefit it would deliver. Once broke in the diff should never reach dangerous levels anyway

Not yet....our first radiator is going into testing right now with a larger transmission cooler.

More testing to come!

And what kind of extra cooling are you expecting to do on the engine? As far as I know the camaro comes stock with an oil cooler. Is the stock oil cooler not enough for a modified camaro?

The stock oil cooler isn't enough for a stock engine. I'm seeing 280-290 degrees halfway through a 20 minute session.

I would agree with that. For sure you can not get them to hold up with 5w30 oil in them in the summer like we have seen so far this year.

The first prototype radiator is in the car ready for testing, and I should have results for everyone soon.

Just did some more testing this past weekend, making some revisions to hopefully work with the ZL1 as well.

Oil pressure is key first, so always make sure the car has pressure but you would like to run the thinnest oil you can given you can keep pressure and temps in check.

If a 5w30 will still maintain pressure at 260+ degree's then stick with it. If you loose pressure to an unsafe level then step up the oil. If the car is going to see 280+ safest bet would be to run a 10-40 or 15w50 as they will take the heat slightly better than a thinner oil, especially hard use on track.

Thumbs up

Thanks Anthony. Sounds like it might be best just wait for the oil cooler and continue running Mobil 5w-30.
