Weak Drivetrain...Best fix?
So ive had some issues with my drivetrain being the weakest link. I've bent two halfshafts and my driveshaft, along with sheering the bolts for the coupler once. After dyno my car makes 425whp and 450 ft/lbs torque. I switched to some forgeline 18s and a set of 305 555rs. The first time i bent a halfshaft and sheered the bolts. I had dropped the clutch at too high of an rpm, but that was with the stock 20s and tires. the second time was a rolling burn out with the nittos. I plan to upgrade to over 500hp and im concerned with the whole drivetrain. If i upgrade axles, I'd still have to worry about the bolts sheering. Is my driveshaft going to break? Or will i just destroy my clutch. I'd like to be able to launch hard and improve my holeshot, but im worried about what will break next and i want to do some preemptive upgrading. Any info would be appreciated.

Go ugly early! Get the Gforce 9" kit and dont worry ever again about the driveline. I got mine installed with S-trac 35 spline diff and 3 1/2 in aluminum DS and really tried hard to break it with 715rwhp. It held up to the abuse for 1500 miles....unfortunately my motor was not able to handle the abuse ![]() While you're at it, might as well drop in a Street Slayer also. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205207

There are lots of options....all depends on your budget!!! Ultimately, in your case, a 9" conversion (like BullF-16 mentioned) would be great. There is a 9" conversion available from DSS (DriveShaft Shop) and Gforce Engineering. Both are excellent products. But there is also another differential conversion (AAM 9.5") available from LPE (Lingenfelter) that is another excellent choice. And lastly, DSS should be releasing their "HammerHead" 12-bolt conversion within in the next few months. Personally, if I had the money, I would wait for the HammerHead. BTW, all of these options will probably run you a minimum of $5500 or so, but I believe they all come with upgraded axles and driveshaft.

I've read some stuff here that basically says for under 600hp for a mostly street driven car, the 9" is overkill.
It's extra insurance, but it's expensive. I will likely just drive mine and wait for it to break.

Yep, you're probably correct. The 9" conversion is pretty darn expensive (out of my price range). As of right now, I plan on just upgrading my OEM differential, axles, and driveshaft. A lot of people will tell you that by the time you upgrade all your stock stuff, you will be within $1000-$1500 of the cost of the 9" conversion anyway. Which might be true...if you buy all new stuff. But like right now, there is a carbon fiber driveshaft in the forum classifieds for $850, and there are 1400HP Axles for $1100. That's like at least $1200 savings right there!!! Just wish I had the money right now!!!

I have looked into the carbon fiber driveshaft and 1000hp axles and it gets about as pricey as the 9" conversion. There are a lot of options but fortunately I have about a year before im settled in from this deployment, so I have a lot of time to plan it out. Still in the back of my mind I kind of want to see what the 6th Gen has in store before I jump on a big build.

If you have zero suspension mods on an M6 you'll probably wheel hop to death anything you buy until you address that first.

You and I are in the same boat. I'm stock and have also broken the bolts on the drive shaft. Now just Saturday night I broke the passenger side axle shaft shifting from 1st to 2nd at around 4500 rpm. Keep in mind my car has 12700 miles and as never been to the track. I really want to be able to have more fun with my car as it is a "PERFORMANCE" car(or was bought to be) but I'm terrified now that its just going to keep breaking. I'm about at my last nerve and am considering dumping it for something else, but I really love the car just wish I had more faith in its durability. Wondering if its just a fluke and I should trade in an an 11 or 12 as it seems like the earlier models seem to be having the most trouble.
I'm really trying to stay positive, but its hard to do so when it keeps breaking. I could and would understand if I were modified but being stock(CAI ) I just think that something isn't right.

Burnouts crush axles/shafts. I've got a pair of stock axles and a stock DS if you need it, and I'm local

A good set of axles and driveshaft would be a good investment. I agree, the 9" is pretty overkill unless your planning on more mods down the road and want the stronger parts to hold the power.
We have our 1000hp and 1400hp axles along with 3.5" aluminum and 3.75" Carbon Fiber driveshafts. Give us or any one of our dealers a call if you have any questions. Thanks Chris ![]() ![]() If you ever do decide on a 9", you should take a serious look our kit. It has all the heavy duty components and lifetime warranty you would expect from a high end kit. ![]()

it's just a diablo tuner. i dropped three inches in wheel size with rims and tires so i think that plays a big roll in my torque increase.
