First oil change : 5W40 instead of 5W30?

Hello,

For the first oil change of my V8 2SS/RS Camaro, the mechanic has used 5W40 oil instead of 5W30, like written in the manual.
When I told him that 5W30 oil is recommended by GM, he said that 5W40 oil is better. Well, I'm not mechanic so I think I have to trust him, isn't it ?

But doubts come when I don't see any "dexos 2" comments written on the oil bottle.

What do you think about that ?

Oil utilised : full synthetic "Unil Opaljet LL plus 5W40"

You are fine, during the winter months 5w30 will be a better choice.

I would do another oil change and bring your Camaro to
a different shop for sure. 5W40 synthetic motor oil is the wrong
weight motor oil to use. GM engineering highly recommends
using 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil every oil change.
Also I would change my oil before the oil change indicator
says to.

I think it is interesting that people support GM engineering on their oil weight choice, but do not trust the oil change interval recommendation.

It might get too thick when real hot, then it wont get into the tight tolerances

After speaking with a GM Master technician the only weight and brand motor oil I would use in a LSX engine would be
5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil with a Mobil 1 or AC Delco oil filter.
Also all motor oil gets dirty and breaks down regardless so,
to prevent the chances of engine oil and engine break down
I would NEVER wait the one year or 10K for the oil change
indicator to tell me to change my oil.Plus every LSX engine I
have ever seen uses some amount of motor oil so,you will have
to add motor oil so,you mite as well just do a oil change.
I do my oil changes every 3 months or 3K miles whatever comes
first regardless of what.That is only four oil changes a year that
is nothing compaired to the guys at my local track that are doing
Mobil 1 oil changes every race plus their normal oil changes.
A oil change is alot cheaper than replacing a LS3 engine.

Change it out and use 5W30, as recommended. In the warmer summer months it is "probably" ok, but why give GM an excuse to void your warranty in the event something that may have gone bad anyway goes bad?

Listen to this man he knows what he is talking about.
Chevrolet dealership service departments can actually take a
sample of your engine oil and send it out to be tested at a lab
to determine what weight motor oil you were using in the event
your LS3 engine does fail and if you were not using 5W30 motor oil
GM will void your powertrain warranty and you will be purchasing
and installing a new LS3 engine on your own dime.
Drain out the motor oil that is in your car now and replace it
with 5W30 as GM highly recommends.

Because my garage is GM referenced ?

I'll plan another oil change in novembre, for the first year of my car.
I'll probably change oil with 5W30 and garage for a competent one.

How is your oil pressure?
My concern with the heavier weight oil is too much oil pressure resulting in oil flow bypassing the filter.

...only if the LS3 has a problem. Which I highly doubt.

Oil gets dirty..yes, but its the additives that break down use the proper weights of oil. You could risk damage to your motor (long term) depending on your driving habits.
