Are 2 oil filter gaskets better than just one?

NO!
Been changing my own oil on all our cars for years and never before had this happen. Didn't pay enough attention to the old filter when I put it in the drain pan, but the 'rubber' gasket stayed on the car and not the filter. When I screwed on the new filter, it went on nice and smooth and tightened up as normal. Before sliding out from under the car, I admired how clean everything still looks under my car. Thought I was finished underneath, added new Mobil 1, checked the dip stick level, and got in and cranked her up. After just a few seconds, noticed oil pressure was a bit low on the 4 pack and heard a squishing sound. Immediately shut her down, looked underneath, and saw oil splatter everywhere!

2 hours later - after cleaning up the underside and the garage floor, changed the filter again (this time paying attention to the #%$@ gasket!), went ahead and drained out remaining oil to make sure I knew how much new oil to put in the second time. I know, expensive lesson for me with 16 quarts of Mobil 1 and 2 new Wix filters for a single oil change, but didn't want to chance running the LS3 on too little oil.

Learn from my mistake!

Been there, done that on a Chev 350 I used to have in one of my cars. Not only does it make a mess, but it's down right embarrassing! LOL

I did the same on duramax. 10 quarts of oil on the driveway. 70 lbs of cat litter to dry it up. I have done my own maintenance forever. I could have saved a lot of money if the dealer had done that oil change.

WARNING

Thought I would shout out a friendly reminder.Went out today and drained my oil (L99) got it drained out & dripped it for an hour & went back and wiped off the pan and the filter pad and quess what ? Found the rubber gasket from the old filter that I removed still stuck up on the pad ! Thought what the h--L. Last change it did not do this.Using Mobil 1 filter's both times.Need to check every time you change it I guess.Must be cutting back on the gasket glue to save a few bucks.Could have been a disaster for sure. Can't depend on anything or anybody anymore.Check recheck, verify. ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR !

This has always been a must do thing ever since I started in the trade. If you look at your filters, there are crimps which hold the square o-ring gasket in place. They don't use glue. Found this out in 1978 as a young apprentice. Thankfully it puked the oil out in the shop and not while the customer was driving. What a mess!

I guess I have been LUCKY .Been changing my own oil since I was 17 yrs. old and now 66 yrs. old and never had a rubber filter gasket come off an stick to the filter base.(until today) .Will definitely check every time from now on.

I did that on my pickup once. Fired it up and wondered why the pressure gauge was bouncing, then heard a noise I didn't like. Only lost about a quart and a half but man does that little amount make a good mess.

Don't feel bad as this is nothing new. I had AC Delco filters do this to me as far back as the mid 80s. It happened once on the pontiac 400 motor I had in a T/A and then another time on the 305 V8 on a Camaro.

You need to inspect the mating surface every oil change. A simple ten second look will save you this headache forever.

The only time that happened to me was with my '67 Camaro. Only lost about a quart though, at 69 cents, LOL

That's why I always wipe the filter mounting surface and visually inspect it. two gaskets is a weak spot.
