It's space shuttle related. I read this in U.S.A. Today and found it interesting.

Not sure if it was because I was reading this thread last night, but I had a dream that I was on the shuttle going into space. It felt so real

But after the Challenger disaster, they decided against it. Florida remains the best place to launch because of the following reasons..

1. Florida is close to the equator. Where linear velocity is at it's greatest, making it easier for the spacecraft to escape Earth's atmosphere.

2. When KSC was built, there was really nothing out at Cape Canaveral, which was good for earlier launches.

3. The shuttle needs to be launched on the east coast, over the Atlantic. Just in case debris falls or stuff explodes. They didn't want the shuttle over land if that happened, so it wouldnt hit people. Now why didn't they launch from California, and go west over the Pacific? Simple. When you're heading west, you're going against the rotation of the Earth, which is much like going against the wind. Which is why more powerful rockets are launched heading west.

The launch complex at Vandenberg AFB is still there, Space Lauch Complex 6 (SLC 6 pronounced slick 6). Not alot of people know that the shuttle was planned for Ca. They widened the roads, put guard shacks on rails so they can roll out of the way when they tow the shuttle across base. Story I got was complex was shut down in part due to contractor who built it fudged all the x-rays for the propellant lines and had to be cut apart, that and what you mentioned.

Always watched the shuttle land at Edwards AFB, that is until the brakes were upgraded to land back at the Cape. Always wanted to see it launch but never got the chance.

*Edit* Also west coast launch's are more for polar orbits

Whats sad is that it's true. So many people are unemployed at the Cape. :(

Like I said, when I get back from vacation, I really plan on filling this thread out with all sorts of space stuff.

That reminds me, Space Shuttle Enterprise's exhibit opens tomorrow.

I wonder why they haven't modified the launch pad yet..

One thing that VAFB will always have, is the honor of being the first landing site of the Space Shuttle.

OK, Shuttle fans...I got the urge to see if there were any decent simulators out, and it seems there is one that was out in 2007...

Anyone know anything about this simulator?

They used SLC 6 for Delta and Atlas launches

Was not aware it landed at VAFB. First time i seen it land at Edwards AFB Ithought it was going to lawn dart into the dry lake bed

I played the demo before, looked like a pretty cool simulator. I may buy it someday.

Hmm...didn't see a Demo. Can you download the program and it works as a demo until you activate it? Or do you remember?

Hmm.. Maybe it's a different simulator. I still have the demo saved on my home computer. So I'll check that when I get home.

Now that our shuttle program is gone, we need to start working on this.

Yes, I know it's not the shuttle...but I'm all about expansion into space. This means getting population on the Moon, Mars, and eventually out to some of the moons of Jupiter.

This is really the first step to getting out of our gravity well cheaply and effeciently.

While I do think the shuttle retirement was premature, I do agree we should start taking steps to start exploring greater space.

I'm very excited to see what the SLS will bring us.
