What the heck is this sound?

I have a Solo catback exhaust, and every time I pull in my driveway (only when turning right) I hear a clank like a pipe hitting something. This is very strange because I don't hear this when driving on the road. I know it's not the exhaust hitting the tunnel brace because I have the Elite Engineering brace, and there's lots of room. I Looked under the car at the entire cat-back, and it doesn't appear to be touching anything. I even shook and pulled on it and still no contact.

The sound seems like it's coming from the rear of the car behind me on the driver's side. Any ideas.

You're sure its your exhaust? If it only happens when turning right I'd suspect something linked to the steering. Say something link springs perhaps.

Not sure exactly what it is...just know it's a metallic sound that seems to come from the rear of the car. I've never heard it when turning corners on the road or anything, but my driveway isn't flush with the street, so there's a little bump when pulling in.

Perhaps the muffler is banging up against the heatshield? Mine is doing that now with my high flows. I'm crawl under there and bang the heatshield up a bit so it doesn't touch.

Well, the muffler is in the middle with the x-pipe, but one of the pipes in the back gets pretty close to the heat shield. I was thinking trying to bend it (the shield) a bit and see if that helps.

Could be the power steering. Check the fluid level.

I know, the muffler is (at least on mine) about 1/2" from the heat shield in the center of the car. The rear pipes shouldn't be that close to it but its worth looking at.

I know I had a clank when I put my flowmasters on. I was told to use spacers or else they would do that, and I did not listen. Turns out it was the banging on the underbody bracing.

I added the spacers and had my cousin give the brace a very slight bend on a press, (just to be sure that job was done) and no more clanking since.

Fluid level looks good.

The front of the muffler and pipes definitely look clear, but I'll have to take a look at the rear portion. It sounds like it's coming from farther back, but it's hard to tell when in the cabin.

It's the part that connects the sway bar to the lower control arm. One of mine came loose last year and it sounded like the exhaust was banging the frame going over bumps.

Jack the car up and and see if you can move it by hand.

Still haven't figured it out. I only hear it sometimes when I pull into my driveway. It's definitely coming from the rear of the car, and I don't think my pipes are hitting anything. They don't contact anything even when I get under the car and shake them real hard.

It's really weird, it's like when my front tires roll over the bump where my driveway meets the road, I hear a noise come from behind me.

TRy checking where the rear hangers are, the prongs that stuck off of my mufflers were very long and where they go thru the rubber hangers were hitting my rear bumper reinforcment, I had to loosen up the rear mufflers and knock them in a bit further on the intermediate pipe to have enough room as to not hit anymore. It was the same symptoms as you describe, only when the car made a certain angled turn did it happen. I guess the flex between the exhaust and the chasis was just right to make them contact each other. But after knocking then in a little further I have never had it again.

Just checked that, too, but it looks ok.

There looks to be enough clearance everywhere, especially at the back end where the sound seems to come from. Guess it's not a big deal, but it's kind of driving me nuts not knowing what's causing it.

This is a coincidental post because i have been hearing a noise on my right rear passenger side when I turn left. It sounded at first like something rolled in my trunk and banged up against the inside of the trunk same side as the gas filler..I checked and I had not left anything in the trunk (I thought it sounded like a can of tire dressing or something rolled into the side). so I will check the exhaust like some posters here mentioned..but it is still a mystery

At first I thought it was something loose in my trunk, too, but my trunk's empty. Then I thought it was my exhaust hitting my tunnel brace, but there's plenty of room there. When I pulled in my drive this evening, I was turning to the right and as soon as my left front tire went up the lip of the drive, I heard the sound behind me. It sounds like it's on the driver's side, but it's hard to tell.

I have not done this yet either, but maybe have someone sit in the back seat and see if they can help to pinpoint the origin Of the noise. And it would be interesting to see if the sound occurs with the extra weight in the back seat.

Good luck,

Bob

That is actually how I narrowed down the clunk on mine to a loose end link. Folded the back seat down, laid down with my head in the trunk, and had my wife drive around. I was able to tell that it was on the one side and in the wheel area.

On a side note, it was actually comfortable riding around like that. I could have easily taken a nap.

Any way you could post a pic of the end link and what I need to tighten if it is loose? I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

The part circled connecting the sway bar to the lower control arm. I had to get the tire off the ground and then I was able to move the end link by hand.
