How fast can we safely come to a stop?
Im gonna go to an event where there is 5000ft of runway and a police officer there to radar your top speed. Im wondering how long I can get on it and safely come to a stop at the other end. Cautiously I was thinking after a half mile, roughly 2500ft, would be time to start slowing down. A quarter mile would be plenty to slow down though wouldnt it? Any thoughts?

IT'S A TRAP!!
Jk. No but you should turn your wheel the entire way and slam on the brakes while pulling up the emergency brake. |

![]() Do that at 2500' then continue to the end ![]() A car will stop faster than it accelerates so 1/4 of the runway should be plenty. There should be a taxi-way at the end so even if you are still going 30-40 MPH you could turn off. If you get enough chances set out a marker (cone) too far back and edge it closer to the end depending on your stopping.

Is this some type of free for all event, or will there be markers? I would think that the radar gun would be positioned at set spot, and you can start braking from there. I went to a 1/2 mile event a while back, and there was a sign at the 1/2 mile mark that said "brake now." And I mean to say....you had better brake!!!!

I know I went from 60-0 pretty damn fast with a car length away in traffic last week.

This will most likely be an organized event. The organizers will have setup braking zones that will be more then long enough to stop. most likely it will be long enough to land a 747 on. lol.
And, unless you've tuned/modified your car, I'm predicting you'll hit 155, give or take 5mph for calibration/metering errors. |

Stopping in a straight line using your brakes (not the e-brake) will be the quickest and safest way to stop.

I am reasonably modified and was one of the fastest Camaros in attendance that day -- at 145. Not trying to be a downer because I know you're going to have fun. Just don't want your expectations to be too high. Of course -- you could be racing under completely different conditions....so good luck!!!!

Even if the event is not organized to the extent that there are braking markers, most runways are marked with distance remaining in 1000's of feet. Take a look the next time you have a window seat on a flight. You'll see a 5, then a 4, etc., on a sign by itself. The signs are there to tell a pilot whether or not he has enough room to abort a takeoff or if he's going to have to go airborne and do a go-around.
1K feet should be sufficient for any speed a limited Camaro can achieve. John B.

n201mw, I've attended the "Texas Mile" Event. the traps are set at the Mile Marker, the track (Runway) was 8000 foot....so there was roughly 3000 foot to stop, and there were cars/bikes clocked at well over 200 mph, the record was set at 257 mph. If your event is a half mile track.....you will have MORE that enough time to stop with your car.

I'd count on 1000 feet to be safe.
According to MotorTrend, the 5th gen SS takes ~300 feet to stop from 100 MPH. That doesn't take into account a reaction time. At 100 MPH you're traveling at 147 feet per second for a total stopping distance of ~447 feet. This calculator (assuming a 0.75 coefficient of friction) gives 446 feet for 100 MPH which jives with the MotorTrend test. At 150 MPH, the calculated distance is 1004 feet. |

I'd guestimate that to stop from 150 mph the Camaro would need at least 750 feet. That said though, a thousand feet would probably be a lot more comfortable

I completely missed I had responses to this. It didnt tell me. Hmmm... Oh well. By the time I got to the event they were all booked up and I didnt get to run. Im an air traffic controller so I know about the runway marking signs thats what I had planned on using for distance remaining. I saw some other Camaros run but I think they all let off at the 1/4 mile. Im gonna try to go next year. Thanks for all the answers everyone.

If it helps as an air traffic controller i have seen T45 trainer jets go from about 150 mph to 0 in about 2000 feet. Then again i have seen F18s go from 145 to 0 in about 400feet, granted they had a tail hook and an arresting gear to catch them lol.

I've gone from right at 200 to stopped in a little less than 3000 feet... without dumping the laundry... Texas Mile... If they give your half of the 5000 feet for accelerating, then I would figure you'll be around 135 or so when it's time to start braking...

If you see two big white blocks painted on the runway wiz by on the far end you have 1k feet left. Start braking.

Typically doubling the speed will increase the stopping distance by 4 times. If for example
30 mph stops in 30 ft, then 60 mph stops in 120 ft This does not include reaction time as noted above. |
