1LE Camaro Tire Dilema

With GM dragging their feet on releasing/building the 1LE it looks like they won't be hitting dealerships until the fall/winter. Since they come with summer tires that presents a problem living in a state with winter. That leaves me with 2 options.

1. Wait to order the car. Meaning it will be another half a year before I get the car.
2. Replace the tires and enjoy the car when it's cold.

I would like to make #2 happen. However, does anyone make winter tires in that size? What are the ZL1 owners running for winter tires? If there are no winter tires, then has anyone one all season tires in the cold with good results? If so, then which tires have you run?

Buy a set of stock ss rims from the classified section. Then slap on a set of nitto motivo all season tires. Then enjoy.

Do the motivo's work well in cold weather? I don't plan to use the car in snow, but the Goodyear Eagle Supercar G:2 that come stock supposedly crack below 40 degrees. Will the motivo's provide adequate traction in the cold compared to summer tires?

If not in snow, you could also just run the factory SS tires. They are also a summer tire, but I haven't had any problems in cold temps. Never drove it in snow though.

Did some math in a ZL1 tire thread. Just replacing these bad boys every 15k miles will come to $11,333 in tires once you reach 100k miles. Not many people in that thread were getting 15k miles out of the goodyears.

The stock tire size on the 1LE is suppose to be 285/35R20. There is no Motivo tire in that size and in fact I can't find anything except the goodyears in that size. But......it looks like the 275/35R20 Motivo should be a adequate replacement? I am far from being a tire expert, so can someone with tire knowledge give me their input?

The goodyears that will come stock have an overall diameter of 27.9
with a width of 11.4. Those numbers are pretty much dead on with the
Motivo's and you would expect those numbers out of a 285/35R20 tires instead of a 275/35R20.

Overall diameter on the Motivo: 27.87
The overall width: 11.38

Compare that to the Invo's that also come in 275/35R20

Invo Overall Diameter: 27.6
Overall Width: 10.67

That seems more what I would expect out of a 275/35R20 tire.

get a set of used SS rims and put 275/40/20 Pirelli Scoprion Ice & Snows on all four corners. That's what I do for the winter and the car handles better than my old Wrangler.

It also looks like Pirelli has a set of winter tires in 285/35R20. The sotozeros.

It isn't the only place I've lived. I lived I Vegas before San Diego. Winters there got fairly cold. Even had snow my first winter there. Plus I've travel a lot in the time I've had her.

Do what I did, I ordered a beautiful set of 245/45/20 Pirelli Scoprion Ice & Snows for all 4 corners. The skinnier the tire the better it will handle in the snow and it will only add roughly 3% spedo difference (pratically nothing). I went throught Bestwheeldeals.com and ask for Jon. Super fast shipping and this guy was amazing. I got the tsw nurburgring wheel , gunmetal finish and I cant even describe how cool these look. He also gave me painted to match center caps and powder coated lug nuts for 2850 with free ship!

I would have to agree with Steiger and BLKSS1LE with the seperate tire and wheel combination as I will be doing the same once I get my car. This will save on the wear compared to getting all seasons and you should get more life out of the tires. It will also be pretty easy to swap out the tires instead of having to bring them to a shop and swapping out the tires only.

Should I be looking for used SS wheels then or will the 19" 2LT wheels from the V6 fit?

I am looking into 18" wheels that will fit(I've read that they will as long as you don't have the brakes with the rollerskates for weights) Tires should be a little cheaper and give a taller profile for a better ride. Yea, if you could find used, that would be cool. There was someone on the forum selling a set of 18" LT tires and wheels for like $700 and I was corresponding with him up until a few days ago, but I guess he found another buyer. Oh, well, there will be another opportunity.

damn buy a beater four wheel drive truck for the price of some wheels and tires instead. all that salt will kill your new 1le. I lived in Maryland for two years and I could not believe what those salty winters did to two year old cars. the calipers, rotors, frames, were all flaking off. gross.

Summer tires get hard when it's cold out and traction can be very dangerous. It's not smart to drive with them in freezing temperatures.

Meh! I'd just drive it to a touchless car wash every couple of weeks and it will be fine. I've got a 2006 grand prix and driven thru 2 winters and there's no more rust than when I first got it. Besides a reliable beater 4 wheel drive vehicle around these parts are more expensive than a set of tires and wheels.

I'm putting snow tires, Pirellis, on my stock rims, I have black rims with my summer tires up front and drag radials on back.

I haven't put them on the car yet but soon. I'll post up my thoughts. My car runs 12.3's right now and makes 380rwhp.

I'm wondering with them driving the 1LE's about 14 miles before delivery to get the hood wrap done etc what are they gonna do when there's snow on the roads and it's well below freezing at the products plant? Would they trailer the cars to get the wrap done, put diff wheels and tires on? I can't believe they'd be driving these cars on snowy/icy roads back and fourth to the location for hood wraps.

They dealt with it when they were building the ZL1's last winter, and they have the same tires. So, no, they won't be trailering or swapping out tires, they just have to be cautious driving. Could be one reason that the cars are in QC for a little while during the winter months until the roads are drivable.

I'm considering getting Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires for my 1LE, putting 275/35/20 on front and 315/35/20 on back. I read in one of the forums that some of the ZL1 people have had good results with this combo.
