So, AAC's concept side mirrors....

I love them, absolutely love them. Worth every penny. The car really should have come with them from Oshawa, but it's understandable why they didn't - but I'll get to that in a minute. I'm breaking this down into categories because otherwise I'd be jumping around and whatnot.

Install
Super duper easy - well it looked super duper easy. I think it took all of 30 minutes. So putting into account that AAC does these kinds of installs for a living, and the rest of us just kind of wing it most of the time I figure it would take you about an hour. The wiring was easy, just T-tapped into the ABL wiring (if you don't have ABL you can tap into the yellow wire going to the window switch).

How the look
Am I allowed to say they look awesome? Like can that be my final answer? Because that's honestly how I feel. I mean obviously the concept mirrors are "shorter" than the OEM mirrors, but I think what really makes them is that the bottom portion of the mirrors is flat - which gives the mirrors a clean, IMO aggressive, look when you view the car head on.

From inside the car nothing has really changed, I mean the mirrors are a bit longer than the OEM mirrors but you hardly notice that. The only thing I've really noticed is that they are "shorter" than the OEM ones. But honestly, it's not that big of a deal to me. I'm OK with them being "shorter" when they make the car look more bad ass.

Field of Vision
Reader's Digest version is that the concept mirrors have a larger field of vision than the OEM mirrors. AAC pulled this off by using spherical mirrors, "spherical" is basically the retail way of saying that the mirrors are convex. It's the same concept as those big dome mirrors you see around blind turns, except the dome isn't as big. The curvature is big enough to give you a bigger field of vision, but small enough that you don't realize that the mirror is even curved.

With the concept mirrors being "shorter" than the OEM mirrors you do lose some of the height of your field of vision. Honestly though, you don't need the height. I mean do you really need to see the whole front of that mini-van at your 5 o'clock? No. You just need to see the headlights - well I guess it depends on how you have your mirrors set up.

I set my mirrors so that if/when I can see both of the car's headlights there will be about 3-4 feet behind me when I merge into their lane. Now, those of you who are jumping to ask about auto-dim - I'm getting to that.

I had the mirrors installed a few hours before the cruise, basically giving me enough time to properly adjust them before we hit the road. Holy poop do these things increase your vision. I want to say that I have 160 degree field of vision, but you just know me - always forgetting my protractor But it's honestly ridiculous, on a four lane highway and if I'm in the 3rd lane ( 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ) I can see all the way over to the jersey wall on the inside of lane 1, and that's all out of my driver's side mirror. Oh totally forgot to mention, I can see directly behind me too. So with only the driver's side side mirror I can see lanes the emergency lane, lane 1, lane 2, and lane 3.

Auto-Dim
You don't need it, and that's not me saying "blah blah blah suck it up" I'm literally saying you don't need it. I don't know if it's the way I have my mirrors set up or if it's due to them being spherical and whatnot - but headlights don't blind you. OK, there was one time that I was *slightly* blinded by headlights - but it was from an eighteen wheeler that was tailgating me. Needless to say I just moved over and let him pass me.

Quirks
The passenger's side mirror whistles a little bit (sorta like how some people experience a whistling from the driver's side mirror) - mind you, how I have my mirrors set could be causing this. I've already spoken with AAC about the issue and they want me to put a piece of weather stripping in the top gap between the mirror and the housing (that weather stripping can be used for anything right ). If this corrects the issue (which I'm pretty sure it will), AAC will be installing it post painting on all of the mirrors. This is where I was impressed, off of me (just me) having this issue they are adding an extra step to their finishing process in the off chance that other people might have the same issue. This is why I continually say that AAC has the best customer service of any company I have ever dealt with - because that is absolutely 100% true.

One last thing - be prepared for people to ask you about the mirrors. I want to say at least 4/5 times I park somewhere and if people are around I get asked about the mirrors and whether or not the car came with them from Oshawa. Well I mean they say "from the factory," but we know that our camaros are born at Oshawa. I actually had a coworker (was giving her a lift) ask me what I did to my mirrors, and why I "chopped them in half." Made me chuckle, not a LOL but more like a hehehe

Feel free to ask me any other questions or what-have-you about the mirrors. I'm here all week

Looks great Stieger!

Would there be a way to hook them up to use them as both parking lights and blinkers, without DIC's? What im thinking is during the day they would just be blinkers. Then at night they would run full intensity and flash when your put your turn signal on. Instead of them running half intensity then getting brighter when you put the turn signal on.

I've got a few questions:

Q1- Any pics of the hydrocarbon fiber mirrors?

Q2- Is there no 50% off for the carbon fiber option like there is for paint?

Q3- If there is hydrocarbon fiber on the top and sides what is on the bottom? (disregard... found my answer in earlier posts.... carbon color / no weave)

Q4- What is on the interior of the mirror housing / behind the mirror? (that little part you see behind the mirror)

Q5- Is the "ghost" option available for the Hydrocarbon?

"Hydro Carbon Fiber= Carbon Fiber effect (like bumblebee in Transformers 3). Note: the Hydrocarbon effect will be on the top and sides of the mirror but no on the bottom. "

thanks-
e.b.

All of us who pre-ordered get ghosting unless you don't want them ghosted. Stig's are the prototypes, and were not ghosted.

Never had time to paint them before the Fest. So they're just primed currently.

I figured you guys were under the gun just to get them on. So people know, the actual mirror will come ghosted.

Pre-ordered!, figured id lock in the price,$600 bucks is a lot of money for mirrors, stiegers review pushed me to get em... anyways they should be worth it, better visibilty, nice led strip that im gonna make blink with the blinkers, and a more bada$$ look, and it just sets the exterior of my car apart from all the other ones just a bit more. if i decide against em ill just sell em, but i doubt it

I'm hoping the LEDs are long life, it's going to be a bitch to send back for warranty work.

Not going to be an issue we did extensive QC testing with the LEDs. The composite LED holders we designed actually do a great job of wicking away any heat that built up between the LEDs and lens so the LEDs should be extremely reliable.

We had to make a couple last-minute adjustments today on other areas of the mirror like changing the type of looming we will use, and the way the wires will route out of the final version. No big changes but we are officially done with the development phase and into production.

If I remember the wiring diagram right - it's all there, just the OEM non-heated mirrors don't have the wire for it. But the AAC mirrors do have the wire - so they can be heated.

Ok, but is there a button that needs to be added?

Nope. The mirrors are hooked up to the rear window defroster. So when you turn the rear window defroster on the mirrors turn on as well.
