101!!! If time isn't an issue and you want the better view, 101 all the way! I hope to make that drive in my Camaro someday; it's on my bucket list.

101 and i5 both have a crap load of cops, i5 has high speed limit but no views of the ocean like 101, i5 would be faster I would assume

i5 will be faster, but its a straight highway with pretty boring scenery.

101 would be more enjoyable and you'll get some curvy turns and coastal scenery.

if i was taking my gf for a weekend cruise, id go 101. but if time is a factor, id take I5.

IMO I5 would be a pretty boring drive but probably the fastest. If I had the time I would take the 101 and shoot out to the 1 and take the coast all the way and then cut back inland around Bodega Bay!

Just my 2 cents.

I5 will be a pretty boring drive; if you have the time I recommend taking 101 for the views!

i live on 101 north of Petaluma, 100 miles north.

there are some great roads in the area, depends on how much time you want to take.

if you do it as fast as possible, mostly I5 (boring, but faster) it will be about 722 miles and 12h

if you do a mix and go over toward the coast at Grant's Pass (nice drive along Smith River) then down 101, it will be around 735 miles and 13 1/2 hrs, plus stopping time.

the longest is if you stay on 1/101/1, it will be about 710 miles but 15 1/2 hours plus stops. (the most visually appealing route)

and of course depending on how much you want to stop and see the smaller towns, the long route could take a few hours more.

honk on your way through Willits!!

awesome if i take it i will do an engine rev and honk, well thank everyone for the suggestions ,

my only issue is the rocks and rough road down 101 compared to the smooth highway I5? i know logging trucks might be on the 101 i dont want to destroy my paint job, i have 3 m clear bra but it can only do so much. the redwoods is what i want to see. i live on the coast basically off the 101 so i see ocean all the time but its usually raining.

101 is not too bad for rocks, the smaller roads between 101 and 5 are worse.

the logging trucks are almost no longer, very few as compared to 20 years ago!

i'd recommend taking I5 to Grant's Pass, then over to 101, all the way down to Petaluma.

Nice mix of redwoods and mountain roads, but not a lot of 2 lane, hard to pass areas.

plenty of small towns along the way.

if you stop in Willits, there is a great little diner for breakfast/lunch. ( i am partial, my GF cooks there), but it is the best in town for sure.

I5 for time, but it's boring and sometimes there are pretty good stretches between gas stations (i.e. 50 miles) I took it up to Oakland on my motorcycle and was sweating it once or twice because I don't have much range on my tank.

101 for scenery.

I live in Sonoma County. I agree with this, Hwy 1 in a Camaro is something that should not be missesd! There is a great BBQ roadhouse in Guallala called "Bones". Don't miss it.
