Its also a myth that the original Z/28's were substantially lighter weight. According to the NHRA stack car classification guide the 1968 Z/28 was only 12 pounds less than a 1968 350 camaro. I get tired of people saying it would need to be 100-300 pounds lighter to be a "true Z/28". Put a pair of Recaro seats in it and call it good.

Thank You!!! The only Camaros that were heavier were the BB Camaros.

Not totally true,no '96 SS Camaro's had the LT4 (These were reserved for manual trans Corvette's only that year) and only 100 '97 Camaro SS cars were built with the 330 hp LT4,they were all 30th Anniversary pkg cars, and they were built/modified by SLP...

http://www.carcraft.com/roadtests/908/

The rest had the 285 hp LT1.

Nobody should be concerned with weight on an LS7 Camaro.

SS curb weight-3860 lbs
1LE- 3875
ZL1- 4120
With the 1LE even with lighter weight wheels and tires were not enough to keep it from gaining weight. Ask some 1LE owners how it performs compared with an SS. Night and day difference. The ZL1s handling prowess needs no explanation. Expect an LS7 Camaro to land somewhere under the ZL1s weight just under 4100 lbs depending on content. A Z28 or 1LE/LS7 equivalent will leave plenty of competitors chasing it around a road course. Mustang? Puhleeeez. I believe this next Camaro will hold its own well into the mustangs next generation.

Although way early to assume or determine what the LS7 will have or even if it will exist, odds are if anything it will steal things like suspension, brakes, etc. From the Z!!!
So again I ask How can the Ls7 Be the dominant car??
Not trying to start a debate on this but rather trying to understand where your coming from on this..
Not more or less, different. The LS7 being NA provides a better base for a track car. The mag-ride suspension is not what is wanted on a track car, even though it is a spectacular design. The ZL1 is great at everything. The "Z28" will be an awesome track based car.

I see the "Z28" around the same weight as the 1LE.

Very possible. If they make one available without the frills that could help with price and weight. Do you think the 12 bolt rear end from the ZL1 would be necessary? Wonder how much that would add.

I don't. I know Pete wants it. I think he likes it because it helps balance the car front to rear more and he can go crazy with more power. I think GM put it in there for the fact that some would want to drag the ZL1 using high rpm clutch drops. Again the ZL1 being the jack of all trades car and it being a drag legend.

I was planning to wait on the 6th gen to buy another Camaro, but if this is true the LS7 will get me to bite on another 5th gen.

Is it just me or is it just a coincidence that GM files a trade mark back in Sept. 2012 for the Z28 name and this additional news about the LS7 comes out. Very interesting.

Actually, the 1997-only SLP-produced-for-GM LT4s were as follows:

SS/LT4 (US-bound) = 100

SS/LT4 (Canadian-bound) = 6 (denoted Czerozero1 thru C006 by SLP)

Firehawk LT4 = 26 in total

All LT4 engines used in the F-cars were hand-assembled AND dyno-tested by Zeke's Automotive in Lasalle QC (dyno sheet shipped with every car!), a shop formerly owned by SLP-Canada's then-President Terry "Zeke" Maxwell...who owns LT4 Czerozero1, which has a GM VIN earlier than Rick Hendrick's "Serial Number 1" LT4...

By the way, Zeke also owns the original Red '96 SS engineering mule (LT1/MX0), used as a media car. Zeke also drove a '97 SS-LT4 into the '12s on stock tires, a feat covered in one of the buff-books of the day.

Brembo 6-piston front brakes (ala ZL1) and (in my mind) the mandatory HD ZL1 diff. will add some weight to the 1SS/1LE Base. However, depending on what hood/aero mods/seats are utilized, the final Curb could be 3925...or less...or about the same (roughly) as a GT500...

Should be a lot closer to the 1LE than the ZL1 is...with better "balance" than the ZL1, particularly with the HD rear diff...which is necessary for TWO reasons:

1) Durability - this car WILL see track duty - both straight-line AND road course - and, with 50 ft/lb extra torque on hand, it makes no sense to put what might be a "marginal" diff. in a vehicle with upgraded "sticky" tires. Build it once, RIGHT, and customer satisfaction will ensue.

2) The aforementioned extra weight, although unsprung, will move the chassis closer to the engineering-ideal 50/50, fr/rr.

"If you build it, they will come". "They"...are HERE!

I can't see the 6 pot fronts being much more than the 4's due to the 2 piece rotor.
The rear of the SS is holding up to the extra power that many have thrown at it, ie. superchargers. I think the 1LE rear is substantial enough. I don't want the extra cost or weight unless absolutely necessary.

It is a lot of people, but they also filed for 'El Camino', 'Nomad', 'Turbo Jet', etc.

Does this mean the UTE is on it the way to the US and we are going to get a station wagon too?

I do like the idea of an LS7 factory option in the Camaro, they can call it what ever they want.

I remembered the LT4 Firehawk's,just didn't mention them because we were talking about Camaro's specifically.
I did however forget all about the Canadian LT4 SS's,probably because most magazines don't mention anything about them for whatever reason

Quite a few people don't give that LT4 engine much credit.

It is a very respectable engine, especially in the lighter weight '96 Corvette.

I kind of hope it is like the motor trend concept picture or the design picture of the Z28 when GM was first introducing the 5th gen. A mix between the SS and ZL1.
