Thanks, JonnyBfromPeoria and SC2150. I don't plan to track the car but I am planning on keeping for a long time. Seeing all the posts, I am leaning towards getting one. My vehicle has a TPW of 3/18 so I have some time.
Thanks again for the replys once I am ready I'll make a phone call.

Keep this bumped up for those not understanding the catchcan and the differences of the ones available.

ZL1 after ~2500 miles

Does this seem about normal after 2500 miles on a ZL1? I've got about 4000 miles on it so far.

Sorry for the lighting...The color and smell is exactly like oil (seems like not much else is in there: water, contaminants etc.).

Yes that looks normal. Every engine will have a different amount of ingestion depending on how the engine was broken in (the harder it was run within reason, the better the rings seat, the less issue. The easier it was run the first 500 miles, the greater chance it will have oil issues forever).

What you want to do is test your cans function as far as oil pull through to see that your catching all. At any autoparts store pick up a clear glass inline fuel filter and install it between the cans outlet and the intake manifold.....watch to see if it shows oil getting past the can. If none is your doing the best you can, if there is still oil getting past then get a can that traps all the oil.

Damn, I made it though the whole thread. Funny how it's changed. Bump for great info from SC2150 on page 4.

I have 18k miles on my V8, and looked at my TB. It had a slight film, then I opened the TB. Damn, it was completely covered in oil. Worse is that it's burnt black oil on the other side of the TB plate. I wiped it out, the best I could. So each to his own, I'm doing something with mine, that's for damn sure.

Also I didn't know that the vapors can reduce octane rating, or decrease gas mileage.

And just to keep this interesting. For those that are car people, that think that this kind of oil ingestion is OK to burn and turn into carbon buildup inside the engine. Do you realize how hard that carbon is? Do you know what happens when it comes loose?

Very abrasive, and when small particles break loose (they do) some are forced between the pistons and cylinder walls hence the scouring we see when doing rebuilds. Also, glowing carbon will pre-ignite the mixture befor the spark plug causing detonation.

Also, click on this link to see pictures posted by techs for every domestic and foreign auto manufacturer (and a few motor cyles) to show how wide spread this issue is:

These are pictures from the actual techs tearing these motors down and show before and after physical cleaning, etc.

Here is what my RX catch can had in it after 3,500 miles
The cup is about the same size as the catch can itself.

I have read all the catch can articles here and have one on order. But I am not sure I need it. I'm getting the idea it's good for guys who use the car to perform. I do not. I am retired, and bought it to run around town - truthfully it's been a boyhood dream to own a SS camaro, I love it. I drive only about 6K a year - never on the interstate, just around town. Do I need one? In two years I'm trading it on a new Vette, also a dream of mine...so what's the verdict? - should I install one?
thanks to the experts in advance!

If you plan on only owing it 2 years then a catch can's extra cost wouldn't benefit you. Your engine, yes, you, no. I use the EE can and have since around 30 miles. Did the aggressive engine break-in process and during that time found a few ounces of oil in the can. I plan on keeping my car though ... so the catch can and the clean air side 1LE Air Oil separator are on my car.

Has anyone used the G8 bracket with the Elite can on a ZL1 with a CAI? I ordered this setup today from Maryland Speed.

Hi was checking my RX catch can today and noticed the wing nut was fastened all the way up. From what I have read it's suppose to be all the way down to work properly. But when I brought the wing nut all the way down the oil that was captured came running out. So is it suppose to be this way or is it on the RX catch cans for the ZL1 it's reversed and closed is with the wing nut all the way up? Thx for any insight.
