Do you think a new Z/28 could beat a 69 trans am camaro ?

On an average course like Laguna Seca

I believe it would be no contest. Even though were talking about a full blown race car, I would have to go with the new one.

Well, Heck yeah!

2014 Street Legal to 1967 Street Legal... Most definitely!

Can't say about all out race cars until new ones are built!

Question is 69 race car VS 2014 Street version Z/28. At least that's what one must assume since he said 69 trans am Camaro.

Technology has advanced so much that race cars of yesteryear can be outperformed by mundane street cars today. Modern track focused car will annihilate anything from 1969.

I remember seeing an interview of Walter rohl mentioning today's street cars are far more capable than the cars he used to race back in the day

2014 Z/28 would win easily. Wouldn't even be close.

With a vintage race car it's something to test. T/A cars were 450+ horsepower and stripped. I've see the vintage cars race and they are quite rowdy.

I would like to see it but if I were a betting man the 2014 would take it.

The old classic Z/28 was limited to only 302cid but still put out 500+hp to the crank... so it does have power to hoot. But as stated, today's technology easily surpasses it... suspension, steering, braking, tires, chassis, trans, rear, and greater durability/reliability. The new Z/28 will likely endure longer as well, on & off the track. It would be neat to see a past & present head-to-head! Road & Track... hint, hint. The classic race car looks badass still to this day and worth easily over 100K. Here's the Penske version...

Everything I have ever read said they were 450hp. There is a fully restored one that's over 500hp

If that was rated at the flywheel an LS3 has it beat by a long shot. In a gross rating the LS3 is high 400's almost 500. an LS7 has got to be in the 600hp range.

The 2014 would beat it on pit stops alone the diference in fuel mileage has got to be ridiculous.

I've had 400+ HP carburated SBC's before they can't compete with the LS3 in my 2013. Hell the delivery is insane too. The chassis on my 1LE surpasses anything I've ever built includong a C3 Vette. To get the kind of power out of an SBC that an LS7 or even an LS3 you would have one of the rowdiest beasts you ever saw.

Power-to-weight favors the '69 Sunoco Special.

EVERYTHING else, especially including TIRES, favors the '14...

Speaking of weight, don't forget the acid dipping done to the Trans Am Camaro.

I found a dyno of a 70 boss mustang and it was 455 to the tire. Pretty decent. Also I found an in car 70 boss race car at laguna seca and I was trying to sync it with a video of new boss mustang laguna seca and that seemed pretty similar. The z would walk that car for sure.

A little Googling provided a point of reference. Mark Donahue's fastest lap in winning the 1968 Trans Am race at Mid Ohio was 1:43.7. I have a LOT of experience at Mid Ohio and I can guarantee that the 2014 Z/28 will lap faster than that right out of the box.

What's the avg or best lap time of a modern street car at that track now?

My best lap on the same track configuration in my 1994 stock class race car with 215 rwhp and 14 lbs/hp is 1:42 flat. And I'm not as good as Mark Donohue.

I have no doubt that I could handily beat my race car's times in a 2014 Z/28.

The new Z/28 would win, and by a large margin.

So I'm continuing to answer my own question. The video of laguna seca on old bass I timed at 1.46 and the laguna seca new boss was 1.40. Got to say the in camera of the old car looks like a blast. Check these out
