There are different types of leave in the military. Ordinary leave is the most common and is chargeable. Emergency leave is still chargeable and can only be used for immediate family deaths, etc. Immediate family members are parents/siblings/children (with some circumstances). A grandfather is not considered immediate family unless they raised the military member a certain amount of years when growing up. Emergency leave is different from ordinary leave because it grants the military member access to take leave, regardless of impact on work/mission (cirumstances apply here too).
