How much power can factory transmission take?

Anyone happen to know how much power/abuse the stock 6-speed tranny and rear will take before they start to have issues?

My boosted LT1 in my sig is still sporting the stock tranny and has never given me issues.

It would be great to have the stock tranny on the new Camaro be able to take similar abuse (750 RWHP or so before something would be expected to break). The rear (although highly improved from the 4th gen) I am not holding my breath on to hold for similar power with sticky tires before something gives.

Does anyone know how much abuse the rear and tranny will take? Or is this a question asked too early?

That is a good question, seems alot of M6's trannies are breaking on the site. Most from clutch dumps. Use the search button it is your friend.

The few reports of broken M6's on this site is pale in comparison to the amount of M6's that are working just fine out in the real world.

I tried the search already, but found nothing conclusive as to the specifics of my question.

Those that I found with broke M6 tranny's I would agree are in the vast minority. I have also heard from a guy who literally drove his stock Camaro 24 miles from the dealer and the rear end broke on him.

These are not what I would expect to be regular occurances, or anything I'd worry about especially for a stock, or even lightly modified new Camaro. However thats not what I am talking about.

I am wanting to know how much RWHP is too much, on the more highly modified end. Specifically, if I get a new Camaro, I want to boost it. I know what I need to do to the LS3 to make it boost friendly. That is not really a big deal. However there are no real aftermarket trannys and rears available yet for the 5th gen, and I need to know if they will be able to withstand the power level I am looking for (750-800 RWHP).

Anyone know how much abuse they can really take on a consistant basis before something is expected to break?

The Hennessey, Lingenfelter and Fesler modified cars are using the stock transmission for up to 700 bhp, est. 600+ rwhp, not sure how much more room than that there is.

Torque is the factor not horsepower. Most trannies will handle more than what they are rated for.

The rear end should handle more than what the GTO was capable of, it is an improvement over the GTO V-body platform. Hard to tell, autos are more forgiving than manuals on the drivetrain.

We have been over this subject multiple times, and each time we have came to the same conclusion. There is no recall as of yet. So we would continue to assume that the problems found on this website have not been a serious, platform wide issue.
