Break-in

Which break-in method have you used and what of the perceived results?

I have seen other topics regarding the following but no precise members who said they have used it and achieved above average results:

Drain the M1 and fill with shell rottela or any good conventional oil (pennzoil or quacker state 5/w30 (no heavier).

Drive the first 25 miles easy and shut down to cool several times and that heat cycles the ring & pinon in the rear diff properly. Then drive relatively aggressive being safe and obeying laws (dont beat the heck out of it) with several wide open throttle runs, but easy on deceleration. NO 5000-6000 rpm down shifts to engine break, just normal.

After app 1000 miles, drain and fill with a good full syn (I prefer Amsoil, Valvoline, Pennzoil over M1, but M1 is still good) and you should have no oil consumption issues and max ring seat for power. Get our RX catchcan on it ASAP as well.

Hope to get some feedback from you other owners

Swapped out synthetic for dino at 100 or so miles..........and never looked back. Didn't granny it, but drove normal for first 500...........then took it on a 4700mile trip on Route 66. Have no statistical evidence this prevents anything...........but I can say, I swapped out the synthetic for dino in my '06 GTO also. I have never used any oil in either.

I think the old ways of engine break in are not needed, engines today are build to exact tolerances and are usually ran before they go into a car. Usually from what I have read is the break in is mainly for the drivetrain so the clutch seats and wears into the flywheel and pressure plate. Transmission syncros break in and rear diff and lsd break in. I did my first oil change at 4000 miles and went with amsoil, the damn dealer did a free oil change at 9500 miles when I had a front timing cover crank seal replaced and I recently did another oil change back to amsoil at 13000. No oil consumption at all.

I just drive normal with the exception of NOT flooring it for a couple thousand miles and then do an oil change.

hard break in seat those rings!change that mobil 1 out of there asap then get a magnetic drain plug and change fluid during the brake in every 2000 or so. get a quality oil like gibbs or amsoil get a good filter like wix or purolater. change the tranny and diff fluid during break in at like 5000. id even get a catch can and a 1le oil seperator to minimize oil injestion.

car feels a bit peppier after break in and then the bolt on mods start!

Kept below 4000 rpm, per GM recommendation. Oil & filter change at between 500 - 1000 miles.

Drove varying speeds, no cruise control. Highway speeds from 70 to 90 (90 in an 85 zone, for those who are counting...) for probably 500 miles.

I drove mine pretty hard ( Not all out ) from the start. I've currently got 30K on mine. No oil usage at all. Just drive it spirited and you'll be fine. After about 2K miles I drove it like I felt like driving it. No problems at all.
