Tune or not to tune?

Hey guys, I installed a K&N CAI and Flowmaster american thunder cat back system on my 2010 SS. Should I have the car tuned? The AFM is also driving me crazy when it turns on at 45 mph the car vibrates. I have been manually shifting the auto trans to help this. Lastly should I be getting better than 13.7 mpg on the highway? speed limit is 70 here & I will run about 77mph. The only reason for asking this is that my 2500 Duramax gets better highway milage. So should I have the AFM turned off? Will tuning help fuel milage?

Thanks for the help.

Ummm I get 29mpg highway @ 75mph lol.

Yes it's a 2010. It's time for a tune. Especially with those mods. You'll get the most out of your mods and improve your mpg. Also, not have to deal with AFM.

For no reason, other than you're driving in rush hour, should you get 13.7mpgh

Before you tune out your AFM, consider this. Many of us L99 drivers have one and LOVE it!
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283175
I would add though, if you're already out of warranty you may want to just tune the AFM out. At least now you have a choice, thanks to the folks at Range.

(and I personally believe MPGs are better with the Range AFM Disable device) See my review here: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showpo...4&postcount=11

you car shakes when AFM is active? Do you have powertrain warranty left? It shouldn't shake the whole car.....or are you exaggerating for forum sake?

Might wanna take it in and see if your AFM lifters haven't crapped out yet, and make sure there's nothing else going on internally wrong in your engine before more mods or a tune

oh no....you can't say that. you don't know how he drives. MPG is WAY more driver based than engine based.

When did your MPG start to suck like that? Should be betting over 20 MPG on the highway or even better.

Now that's a realistic reply. I suggest always resetting your computer when checkng the mileage.
I've never gotten much over 24 MPG, and that's really trying using cruise control/65-70 MPH, etc.
The OP @ 13.7 hwy seems way low.

His warranty isn't dead. Still 2 years left.
But, do it anyway.

Your mileage should not be that bad. Do you have a heavy foot when accelerating from stops?

I just bought the car 4 weeks ago. I drove it from the west coast to east coast bone stock and the computer said 13.7 mpg. Installed my upgrades and still 13.7mpg. I drove to Orlando this weekend & she used a 1/4 tank each way. About 115 miles each way. I don't drive her to hard I have a cdl to protect. This past week end was all cruise control for the most part.

You said about resetting the computer, how do I do that? My wife's Tahoe shows you your real time mpg as you drive.

As far as the vibration from the afm, you hear it more than feel it. It's annoying because my wife's 2010 Tahoe switches back n forth and you would never know it. If there was a problem with lifters would it not send a code or engine light? Keep in mind the car only has 6850 miles on it.

The car should be getting much better fuel mileage than that. I wonder if you don't have a issue somewhere.

A tune will make an absolute tremendous difference in the car. I wouldn't hesitate. A good tune will be well well worth it.

First let me thank you guys for the input. I'm going to reset the fuel average system. Then I will schedule a tune. Do I need to change my plugs or thermostat before the tune being that I only did a cat back & CAI?

Ok, reset fuel mileage tool. Scheduled a tune, the guy comes from out of state so he will be here in July. He suggested that I change my thermostat to a 160 degree. He will also program out the AFM. Thanks again for the input.

You did not mention Fuel grade used, 87-91-93 this is a premium fuel car

If 87 was used previously it could be stuck on the Low octane table, a Fuse pull can reset this.

The K&N Under reports Air flow Leaning out the mixture, forcing the fuel trims to Add 10% fuel which will hurt fuel economy.

I disagree with changing the Thermostat if your chasing fuel economy as it will further hurt mileage as it will prolong engine warm up times and further burn more fuel.

There is No performance advantage to a 160 T stat contrary to popular belief.

Same for spark plugs Factory plugs are best.

I offer Free tuning you can do in your driveway with purchase of an SCT hand held tuner, ask around about JRE tuning, the Reviews are nothing short of Amazing.

Then any future mods purchase from JRE also come with Free tuning support.

Ted.

Thanks Rhino and welcome to vendorville!

Mud,
I offer dyno tuning for bolt ons and under for $390.00

Outside that, your Camaro should be getting better MPG on a stock tune than you're currently achieving if you were cruising up I-95 or the turnpike to Orlando.

Phil

You should get better fuel mileage, your car will undoubtebly shift better and you will pick up some power.

If you are interested, we have one of the best tuners around here; Matt Sorian aka Matt@FSP, he can hook you up pretty easily. $299 tuned plus dyno.

One suggestion, do you have any plans for more power? Headers? If so I would hold out until then unless it bothers you that much.

Either way man, pm me if you are interested.
Chris
