Well there's your problem. A little duct tape and you'll be good to go.

Stopped by the shop for a bit to get an update and see the damage myself. What can I say, that motor is torn up.

Almost certainly it was the rods, but Aaron is still looking at everything. Three rods were completely destroyed (just small pieces left), and two more are noticably bent. However, on the three remaining rods we can see:
  • Bearings look perfect
  • Bolts held
  • Wristpins held
  • Pistons took a hell of a beating but didn't crack (even the ring lands)
    • No signs of blow by
    • No signs of pitting, spotting or discoloration from knock/ping
  • Plugs are perfect; no signs of knock
  • Heads are undamaged, although some valves took a wack or two
  • Refractor plate bent and scored the crank (plus a few scratches from flying parts), but other than that it looks like new.
  • Rings held and don't look like they butted at all. They look like we just put them in there.
All in all, it appears to be just the rods that couldn't handle it. So, we are getting some billet steels ones made. The shop doing the work still has to make sure they can do them due to the odd journal size (large like a big block) for such a short length. We are also going to change the pistons a little to try and lose some of the weight we added. This will require a change to the wrist pins, but it will be a more common size so we shouldn't have much trouble finding some just as strong as what we had.

Rhino sent me some more pics I'll try to upload this weekend.

More good news! We are seeing slight rod bolt stretch, but I agree the rods are the weak point and cutom ones (all we can find are custom made) are expensive as heck.

At least I would be confident in the tune and the piston/rings. Your in good hands.

Sounds pretty bulletproof with the addition of hardened pistons and rods.

Can't wait to see her up and running again.

These motors are unreal tuff as far as taking them for just over 300 hp and near doubling it or more.

Damn, got scrap metal carnage all over the place. Will those pistons be of ANY use if not all but at least one?

They are all banged up, so we are replacing them all.

Slowly. Had a bit of miscommunication with the rods. Aaron was leaving town just as they were supposed to go from the original fabricator to the one that could deal with the large journals. They sat on someones desk for a week. All's good now and it looks like those and the new pistons will be getting here about the same time.

I'll be at the shop on Friday, so I'll have a better feel for the timeline after that. Also going to test drive a Sonic. Wife hates her Focus so we are looking for a replacement. I want an RS but she wants an auto, so I'm not as excited as I could be.

Well, didn't get much of a chance to talk to Aaron and Ryan. I think the rods and pistons will be in within a few weeks. The new torque converter will be a while, but the one I have now works really well so the only thing we are missing is being able to lock it up on the dyno. That's not a big loss IMHO. The multi disk may be more efficient than what I have now, but we won't know until it's done.

I got to see Rhino's flycut job and it looks real good. I didn't see them actually do it, but I got to see the tool and they described how they did it. All I can say is that's so much easier than the old school technique. Results look perfect, too.

Finally, they had an auto Sonic RS so that's what the wife drove home. She likes it and now wants some custom stripes LOL. I'll post a pic in a little while. They are cute little cars.

Yeah, I would put it in the same class as the Focus and Mazda 3. Of course, those two have the Mazda Speed 3 and Focus ST that are a whole different level. I guess we'll see if Chevy decides to do a Sonic SS.

Wife hasn't let me drive it yet :(, but I would guess it is a bit more nimble than the Cruze I had. That was a fun little car for a 4-door econobox. I think Chevy hit a home run with the 1.4L turbo/6 speed tranny combo. A nice snap to accelleration and good MPG. However, if it was me I'd have the Focus ST...but it is the wife so if she's happy I'm happy.

Well, if it was up to me no question Rhino would be taking a crack at it. Unfortunately, she's more worried about the Pandora feature not working. I think it her phone is too old, but not sure just yet.

She does like having the "zoom, zoom" back. She's smiling again and won't let me drive it. Think we just got a lemon for the Focus. Others I talk to love theirs, but she had a lot of problems.

Anyone that hasn't looked at the cockpit of the Sonic should. It is really well laid out. Miss not having a center console, but everything else really fits a car of this size. The leg room in the back seat is amazing, too.
