Why does the new Camaro have struts up front?

For such a magnificent sports car, it seems GM is shorting us by not using something more advanced than struts for the front suspension... shouldn't they be using unequal A-arms for better ride/handling balance? The rear suspension will be a 4.5 link setup (should be 5 link really) which is better, but still not great... I just wonder how much handling GM is willing to give up for cost.?

I think the answer is "cost".

Everyone want's the V8 model, and they want it to be affordable. Yes, the set-up you describe is nice, but in order to keep price's "in line", some concession's need to be made.

IMO, I think the new Camaro will handle just fine for 99% of it's owner's intended uses.

Yeah I'm with Moose. They wouldn't build a crap car and call it Camaro. It won't be like a cloud, but it should be close.

I'm sure it will ride better than any Camaro ever mass produced!

I know my old 92 would sit down and felt very stable in tight corners, the 5th gen with IRS should be solid as a rock.

I expect the 5th Gen Camaro to be the best handling Camaro yet, by a substantial amount, too!

I honestly didn't know that any car had a front suspension without struts?

a lot of cars have a regular shock/spring setup like on the rears of our cars, most run struts with the spring wrapped around it. id like the new BOSE suspension setup. lol

and on that, nearly every car out there has a dual a-arm setup with the shock/strut in between. save for front wheel drive ones that have it relocated a little to make room for the transaxle

Struts seem to work fine for Porsche and BMW. I put the whole "struts are dinosaur technology" in the same junk bin as "pushrods are stone aged" and "domestic cars can't handle".

The most simple and most correct answer to why the vehicle will use a strut/spring combo on the front is because that's what the platform they are using to make the car was designed for, period.
